Construction update at Florida Southern College visitor cent

I have posted a few photos (on my website) of the construction at the college. It is very early in the process - mainly site preparation.

mystery doors

I didn't ask when I was there, but some of my interior shots of the church inadvertently included the doors. There's more than one. They do lead directly into the congregation seating area (as you might suspect), but they are slightly above the seats.

Nature

Clearly FLW's style and sustainability connect to nature. But that doesn't mean they connect directly with each other on the basis of sustainability itself, any more than the sustainability movement can claim Wright as its patron saint. This is my last post for a while. When I typed "Wright&quo...

Why Fallingwater matters

Eighty percent of the article appeals to me. Fallingwater is unique in some aspects, and yet it is the culmination of so many Wright concepts that we find in his architecture and all the imitators that followed, from horizontal designs to blending with nature's materials to the ranch house and wide ...

Wright always enjoyed a good wine, so this has always been my favorite "unusual" photo of the master

FLW-inspired computer case

Unfortunately, it sells for 40% more than original cost estimate, and the top leaks.

piano hinges

I was led to believe - probably from tour guides - that piano hinges were less likely to creak and provided greater stability against warping. Maybe those were personal opinions - I'd be interested in what the rest of you have to say about those supposed benefits.

My suggestion may be obvious, although I am always amazed by the lack of obviousness in some books. There are some questions that are probably repeated every day about certain buildings; I would hope a book would answer them. Check with the home owner - what do people always ask about? When I purcha...

FHA loan for Spivey residence?

The FHA loan issue also came up with funding for the professor houses at the college. According to the correspondence I have read, the FHA declined financing for houses with flat roofs. Wright reluctantly agreed to modify his designs to include sloped roofs.

Spivey cottage

To answer an earlier question, I do not know who built the model of the Spivey residence, or when it was built. The display at the college does not include this information. I agree the house was likely designed as a vacation home. The monograph is way off when it describes Fort Lauderdale as "...

shutting out the outside

Shutting out the neighborhood is not unique to the large buildings. Consider the Robie house and its high walls, or any prairie style house that puts the windows high to let in sunlight while directing the interior view upward and away from the neighbor's house. You can say Wright was closing off th...

Spivey cottage

For the record, the Spivey cottage was slated for Ft. Lauderdale, not Lakeland. A model is displayed in Lakeland, though.

My website has a few photos of the model:

It would be nice if one of the lawyers on the Chat Board would prepare and post (pro bono) an agreement between an architect and a client that would grant the client an exclusive right to the design and all the other rights described in the above document. I am a lawyer. Here's the language: "...

round structures

Some of this reminds me of the Dymaxion house (Buckminster Fuller) - with the weight of the structure essentially suspended from the center core.

As for small elevators, I'm sure Mr. Wright would have explained that he thinks travelers carry too much stuff with them.
