The low ceiling height, in this case at 6'8" or 7' maximum, is common in certain portions of Usonian houses, but generally it rises and opens up in some part of the living area. Of course, considering Mr. Laurent's vantage point (being confined to a wheelchair), this ceiling height would probab...

What a terribly cynical article. I have become so weary of the "modernism failed" cliche... And to think that this woman was trained as an architect.

How does she know that the Schaffer house is "unlivable"?

Welcome to Wright Chat! From your description of the qualities which you admire in Wright's work, I would suggest you start by looking into the work of these others: Though not midcentury: Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright's mentor Rudolf Schindler, a Viennese born architect who worked for Wright i...

In 1932 Bernard London coined the term "planned obsolescence" in his pamphlet "Ending the Depression Through Planned Obsolescence". Of course, this idea didn't end the depression, but rather became a model for profiteering within the structure of our capitalist consumer economy, ...

I like the "dinosaur skeletons" of Calatrava, and in his case, the white doesn't bother me. The Libeskind prefab at 2.5 - 3 million?!!? ... ugly at $200,000.00. I generally like Will Bruder's thoughtful work, but here it seems a bit generic, like it could be any number of "hip" S...

I'm in agreement with DRN I think that building Usonian houses for this sort of purpose is fine with me. Someone could walk away with a new perspective on how to build their own house, decorate or remodel their existing one, or even better, find and existing one or hire an architect to design one. I...

Great article! It seems that rooms which were originally designed for one function are now being utilized for another. For example, a new master bedroom being fashioned from another space. Am I correct in assuming this? 4,000 square feet is a lot to work with. Does anyone have a pre renovation floor...

SDR was (and continues to be) of enormous help. I know I speak for Stafford, too, in expressing gratitude for SDR's accurate and clear drawings. Wright's original drawings were often almost illegible and contained more than one or two inconsistencies which needed to be analyzed. Countless emails wen...

You're right. Much of what I might be responding to could probably be remedied with some thoughtful interior redecorating. I think there are outstanding moments in the architecture itself. Maybe I am too much of a purist to appreciate the extensive details and surfaces.
