This has always been one of my favorite Usonian details. I am sure you are right about economy, but isn't it also the wonderful "thinness" of the roof that is so attractive? The stepping of the eaves contributes to an overall lightness in the look.

Those are good choices for the "top ten deceased", but the whole notion of narrowing it down to ten leaves out some of the most important earlier masters like Loos, Wagner, Mackintosh, Richardson, Rietveld, Gill, Scharoun, and of course, the list could go on and on... For current architect...

Many Neutra houses are extremely relaxing. His use of white walls contrasted with the honey tones of birch plywood and sparse use of brick or stone is very calming. I see the all white aesthetic, however, as a trend which harkens back to the late 60's and the retro "Clockwork Orange look"....

It might have been important for Sweeney (and for his future career) to not create the appearance of being too closely aligned with Wright.
