I notice that "This Old House" is now setting up one or more site cameras on some of their projects; the cameras take a still image every five or ten minutes and record the entire process of demo and (re)construction. I wonder who knows about that deal ? The results can be seen on their we...

Thanks, Roderick -- that is good news to me. (I suppose some of us won't be satisfied until we have figured out what happened, week by week and decade by decade, in the inner sanctum of Wright's practice !). Now I will learn what I can from the literature at hand, about the series of houses apparent...

The most concentrated discussion of Wright's design intent that I have come across is found in Grant Hildebrand's book "The Wright Space" (University of Washington Press, 1991). He uses eight of the houses to ilustrate -- very nicely -- his understanding of the kinds of design strategy Mik...

Good question. Of course, any well-made "flat" roof will have at least a very slight pitch in one or more directions, toward the intended drain point(s) -- even if the roofing material is capable of dealing with standing water.

On that note, I am waiting for someone to atttempt an analysis of the drawings that issued from Wright's "office" during his career -- all of it -- to determine how many of them are in his own hand, and which ones are by the many who worked for him in all those years. Has anyone spoken to ...

Mike is fortunate to have made a good beginning at visiting the work. Another dozen or so and some insignts will occur: there isn't any single idea or set of ideas that Wright (or any prolific architect) uses in ALL his work. Different circumstances -- program, site, artistic inspiration of the peri...

Yes -- Pauson and a few other projects explore the nice syncronicity of lapped boards NOT canted but oriented vertically, and the battered (canted) wall that results. In Pauson this is uniquely (?) paired with a reverse-canted desert masonry wall form. . .

Thanks for those links. . . I think the only way to have exterior wood looking like that is with recent maintenance -- think boat "brightwork" (which is the clear-finished wood, not the plated bits !). It sure looks great, doesn't it ? [Wish I could congratulate the graphic designers unres...

Thanks for the photos of your beautiful model, Flax. I like the choice of a monochromatic color; it makes the appreciation of forms much easier. I am quite surprised that you substituted an alternate corner detail at the exterior board walls; I can't recall seeing this corner in Wright's work, thoug...

Johnson may have been the author of this quip: "The building itself is just the necessity that comes between the drawings and the photographs" (or words to that effect). I came across this maybe fifteen years ago, reading something (a magazine ?) at the library. I wish I knew for sure who ...

In 1982 the Chicago Historical Society published a small book entitled "Barry Byrne * John Lloyd Wright * Architecture & Design" in conjunction with an exhibition of that name. In it we learn that John (Lloyd Wright's younger brother) lived in Chicago, Japan, Long Beach (Indiana) and D...
