Well said. Of course it is interesting to get "the dirt" on ANY subject of interest (or of little interest !) to us -- that's human nature, and sells scads of supermarket tabloids every hour. I readily admit to wanting to know more about Olgivanna, about drug use (if any) at Taliesin, even...

The tendency to "gild the lily," to add a little *more* to a story, to make unsupported parallels and conclusions, is as old as man. Scholarly theses and proper journalism are steeped in a tradition which forbids such excesses -- but other sorts of literature do not follow those rules. So,...

Meranti (could that be the word in the fourth message here ?) is denser and darker (generally) than much Honduran mahogany. I designed a deck which was built of this wood. I wish the advice given by the seller (stamped belatedly on the bill of sale), to immediately coat the cut ends, had been follow...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahogany What do you plan to use the material for, and what is the general area where you will be making your purchase ? Furniture and cabinetmakers generally prefer veneered MDF over veneer-core (plywood) these days, because the former has a more reliably flat surface (...

Agreed. There must be a lot of work never seen except when it appears in this way -- briefly.

Ha ! I bought my two volumes there; Vol 5 was listed at $116 and Vol 6 cost $147 -- the most I have ever paid for a book. . .

I own two of the Monographs (1924-36 and 1937-41). It is certainly not true that the series (based on these volumes) covers all of Wright's built or unbuilt work. Aided in some cases by a magnifyng glass, it is possible to learn much from the drawings reproduced; in some cases various stages of a pr...

Wonderful. . . [What a nice surprise, to know that Wes Peters would find himself able, in 1940, to personally finance construction of Pew ! (The usual question: what IS $7850.00 in today's dollars. . .?)] Here is the Taliesin presentation perspective of the house, as found in the 1988 Pomegranate ca...

The phrase "mother of the arts" has been used by many in connection with architecture; one source http://www.designmuseum.org/design/archigram credits critic Reyner Banham (who was friendly with Wright, I believe) with a version. . . I have always assumed that the meaning had to do with th...

Agreed. And, in the connection to Wright, the Pew house and at least one other Usonian are shown in early photos with the chairs (DCW -- dining chair, wood) in the dining area. And they look as right as a Cord sedan in the carport !

Thank you; it certainly seems worth the effort to me, and a natural use of this medium. Mobius: pearls before swine ? To each his own, i guess; that's what makes the world go 'round, they say. . . One more; a detail of one of Yukio Futagawa's color shots of the house, published in 1991: http://sdrde...

Sergeant seems a little hard to pin down -- but he supports the previous poster's statement. On p 11: ". . .Wright's post-depression houses, those of a type of construction used from 1936-1943 to which he gave the name Usonian. . ." And on p 12: "Five years later I began travelling to...
