Thanks, David -- good stuff. Another of the 'fifties "steep-sloped" roofs. I wonder what these feel like inside; they seem a little odd or "forced" to me, when I see photos of them. Did he feel that a proper contrast to the flat-roofed portion could only be a dramatically steep p...

I've added what other Schweikher I could find, to the post with the Upton house, above. Someone online has a batch of photos of Schweikher's house and studio; I'll try to find them. I'm trying to up-size the Upton images. . .

Not that I know of -- yet. His own house has been rescued by locals, I think, and restored. I've added the plan of the Upton residence, above. His retirement home in the desert will surprise many -- if I can find it. It appeared in Fine Homebuilding maybe ten years ago (maybe fifteen ?) Anybody else...

Thank you three (and others who have expressed appreciation) very much. It's a pleasure to be among you, and to be able to contribute something to the discussion. Ed makes his point(s) quite well. I went searching for examples of what he's talking about, and came up with some early A Quincy Jones wo...

Here's Philadelphia architect George Howe, building in Maine in 1939. These two pages from "The Modern House in America" (Ford and Ford, 1940) pack in a lot of information. Sorry for the moire in the photos. http://sdrdesign.com/HoweThomas1.jpg http://sdrdesign.com/HoweThomas2.jpg http://s...

I agree, Ed -- though I suppose I was thinking of "warmer" work (in keeping with the list given) like that of Paul Schweikher, John Yeon, Pietro Belluschi, or a truly dark horse like John Davis. After all, what we are talking about is romantic architecture -- though you have a point, if th...

Q!

"It's all a rich tapestry" as someone said (I hope it wasn't only the psychotherapist on the Simpsons. . .). Everyone has his bit to contribute. I've learned, certainly, from random issues of the JSAH that I have acquired -- but there is a quality of navel-gazing to the ruminations of thes...

An excellent list, Mr Grant, and one that begs a few additions, perhaps. In the meantime, I can't resist applauding your final comment with this:

There was an exhibit mounted which featured the house in large b+w photos and text, with drawings, made when the house was fairly new. I've forgotten where it was shown, but it was mounted for a memorial to the architect last fall, in Tiburon, CA, at the studio he shared with Warren Callister. The N...

Well said indeed. But just because others are following a disappointing path doesn't mean that we have to. It does mean that there is less to choose from, and that our choice is likely to stand alone in its neighborhood, for better or worse. . . just as Wright's did in his time. http://sdrdesign.com...

Then you should do so, sez me, and more power to you. (And, for the record, the design is not copyrighted, only the drawings, and the name, so help yourself.) You bring up all the right questions, of course. "Out of the mouths of babes ?" Most architects working today want to build "t...
