I found the majority of the collection at this site; the enlargements available are unusually generous.

I believe that Toshi made a number of second (and third and fourth ?) prints from the same set of blocks (in most cases), employing different inks to give alternate versions of the same views -- comparable to Monet's haystack series, for instance. Whether Hiroshi or others have done this as well I d...

The graduated colors of sky and water require a graduated layer of ink on the block; this can be accomplished, as I understand it, by scraping off the excess ink with a straight-edge riding up a pair of ramps. The outlining of so many of the areas within the image, often but not always in black ink,...

I agree. I was drawn to some images of that description by the Yoshidas early on; I first came upon these prints 20 years ago, when they could be had for about $80 each at a local gallery. I'm glad I didn't begin a collection, for I wouldn't know where to stop, and my money was better spent on books...

My favorite Japanese woodblock printmakers are Hiroshi Yoshida (1876-1950) and Toshi Yoshida (1911-1995). Here are a few of the father's prints. (My close-up photos of very small catalog plates are compromised in focus and shape; I believe the colors are quite close to correct.) Hiroshi Yoshida : ht...

Thanks. I knew we'd get clarity from some quarter. Quite a saga; interesting anecdotes, too. For what it's worth, the footprints of Residence A and the Director's residence, on Wright's site plan, do not have identical footprints, so at one point, at least, there were presumably separate (but relate...

Hmm. Wish I were there -- or that it would travel here !

I know I've seen more original drawings of the houses, but I can't for the life of me find them. There's one that I think looks like Schindler's work. . .

Incidentally, Mr Gebhard's statement, "Schindler did the preliminary designs and the working drawings for the two other single-family houses which were built on Olive Hill. The drawings were sent to Japan, and Wright approved them, apparently without any changes" is easier to swallow if we...

Olive Hill

Looking further into the various residences planned and (in some cases) built on Olive Hill, confusion arises as different authors seem to present conflicting information. David Gebhard, in his slender 1980 monograph "Schindler," tells us (pp 41-2) that "Before Wright returned from Ja...
