Re: Frank Lloyd Wright's Ashes

Thanks, Lukunor. Let's hope the handsome original, broken in half, has nevertheless been saved. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8uMoFOs6OqM/UJRMI5J8FMI/AAAAAAAAFpM/anpCWsh8K_Y/s1600/P1120327-1.jpg https://bloximages.chicago2.vip.townnews.com/tribstar.com/content/tncms/assets/v3/editorial/b/0a/b0a01b57-c24...

Re: Possible Apprentice 1962 Hemicycle For Sale in Chowchilla, CA ($275K)

Thanks for the report, Kevin. (We miss you.) The 1975 Fresno Bee article found in the "Old House Dreams" discussion shouldn't be missed: https://www.oldhousedreams.com/2022/07/29/1962-contemporary-in-chowchilla-ca/#comment-353478 The misperception that the color in a Usonian floor is added...

Re: Sure, we can call anything "Frank Lloyd Wright"

Chowchilla: shades of Schindler and/or Lautner ? Surely Wright, in the curved plan encompassing a cylinder or cone (giving PJ something to think about at the Glass House ?) a la Jacobs 2, Cornwell, David Wright, others . . . Or, a cavernous central masonry mass, thin-walled, as at Fawcett or Clifton...

"Flat" ? As in, matte ? A rose petal is matte. Or do I misunderstand . . .

Re: David Hunt

18"--unheard-of in Wright, isn't it ? And of course a square grid, so 18" horizontal module as well. It makes a door opening of 7'-6" --very tall for Wright--or 6'-9" if a half block is used--much better, and just a convenient 1" taller than a standard door.

Re: David Hunt

Here is the David Hunt UA as rendered by Steven VInzani, who describes himself as "a 3D modeler and renderer who specializes in unbuilt FLW houses and buildings." Perhaps the most unusual characteristic of this design is that a portion of the house bridges an apparent arroyo or declivity i...

Re: Article: Matthews House -photos / NRHP Nomination

Exactly. That Schindler would appropriate the word for his own purpose might be put down to "poetic license." On page 48 of this nine-page document can be found (twice) the term in the context of RMS. I cannot seem to locate a closer tie between the architect and the word as I believe he u...

Re: Article: Matthews House -photos / NRHP Nomination

I am reminded that Wright and his fellows used the word "deck" to refer to that above-head-height surface I called a light shelf, above. "Datum" means something else in architecture; Schindler used the term to as the name for a structural or architectural element at or just above...

Re: Arthur C. Mathews Residence

I hope you enjoyed a look at an original and well-maintained postwar Usonian. The AD piece repeats the misunderstanding that the interior is Philippine mahogany. The sash are mahogany, but the remainder of the woodwork is redwood--a particularly appropriate specie for a Northern California residence...

The roof, by the nature of its construction and finishes, is thicker than 6"

Yes, the surface is definitely a film, and its rich color is a product in part of a glossy clear coat.

Re: Sure, we can call anything "Frank Lloyd Wright"

I'm waiting for someone (with a bridge to sell ?) to claim that the Golden Gate Bridge was designed by Wright---based on the color . . . https://static.wixstatic.com/media/fa63e8_b3d9323c44ae41e1b9b6b081a2208e4a~mv2_d_3993_1962_s_2.jpg/v1/fill/w_980,h_880,al_c,q_85,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,enc_auto/fa63e8...
