Re: Drennan's "Death in a Prairie House"

Odd how all of this has come to light 107 years after the fact. Numerous sources have said no one knew anything about Carlton's motives, that he refused to talk once he was apprehended. If these claims are verified in Drennan's book - which I haven't read - so be it. otherwise it just muddies the wa...

Re: Drennan's "Death in a Prairie House"

Anything is possible, but to present this sort of thing as a certainty, or even a probability, is irresponsible. Many other possibilities exist that could have served as a trigger, but no one knows for sure what it was. Seven of the 8 died, and unless there was something the survivor said or wrote t...

Re: Drennan's "Death in a Prairie House"

This is the first I have heard of anything concerning racial bias as a motivation. It is wise to be careful not to rewrite history. Anything of this sort should be accompanied by notation to the source. An example of messing with history is the infamous "Lincoln" situation, which spread li...

Re: Article on Wright Houses in St. Joseph and Benton Harbor, Michigan

I have known several professional chefs, all of whom bemoaned the large kitchen in the home, preferring minimalist spaces. Large kitchens mean a lot more walking. For myself, I prefer the galley style, with not enough room for more than myself; when I cook, I do it alone, no help or interference wit...

Re: Alvar Aalto similarities

There's a book: "Sverre Fehn, Works, Projects, Writings, 1949-1996," by Christian Norberg-Schulz, 1997, The Monacelli Press. Fehn's residential work tended to use brick and wood, however his non-residences bore more of a resemblance to the European modernists, more Mies than Corbu. His hou...

Re: Alvar Aalto similarities

Corbu, Aalto, Jorn Utson and Sverre Fehn were friends. It wouldn't be strange to see all of them in any one of their works.

Re: Tazaemon Yamamura Residence (1918)

This is a major work, yet when I search Artstor for the drawings, I find nothing. Since the house was not built until long after FLW had left Japan permanently, perhaps the plans were left in the hands of Arata Endo, who was in charge of construction. To determine exactly what was done by FLW and wh...

The only Aalto building I have been in is the 1970 library at Mt. Angel Abbey in Salem, Ore. It's wonderful.

Re: Alvar Aalto similarities

I guess I mistook some shots of Aalto furniture ;photographed in a rather sad looking building as being in the sanatorium.

Re: Private messages

I try to delete old messages, and when I follow the plan, I get a message saying "messages deleted." But they aren't. I have 200 messages stacked up, and I can access only 5 of them. I would like to know how to get rid of all of them; they are nothing more than an annoyance.

Re: A New Path Forward for the School of Architecture Founded by Frank Lloyd Wright

Taliesin Fellows was founded independently of Taliesin by 7 former apprentices in Southern California - Paul Bogart, Robert Clark, Don Fairweather, John Geiger, Bradley Storrer (Bill's brother), Louis Wiehle and Eric Lloyd Wright - who attended a reunion at Wisconsin in 1987. It retained its indepen...

Re: Alvar Aalto similarities

What is the status of the Paimio Sanatorium? I recall not so long ago that there was a video about it, but cannot recall where I saw it. Looks like it's in a dreadful state of repair.
