Re: Wright Post-Italy; Goethe Street and Taliesin I

I don't know if Paul Rudolph was expressly referencing Goethe, but he designed a wonderful NYC townhouse in the East 60s between Madison and 5th Avenue that uses a similar arrangement of spaces, with the principal living room in the center of the house rather than at either end. That 2-story space i...

Re: Alsop house news

When the original copper-pipe heating system at Sol Friedman failed, the owner didn't demolish the slab to repair it, but instead installed a new system of radiators, artfully disguised in cases designed to blend with the architecture.

Re: Who said the round house is a challenge ?

While it isn't in the northern Amazon part of Brazil, but just NE of Sao Paulo, not far from the coast, the rainfall must be considerable, making that funnel-shaped roof with the hole in the middle a source of distress during downpours.

Re: Wright Post-Italy; Goethe Street and Taliesin I

SDR, what you are reading (in the transverse section) as a terminus of the mural at the left side is actually the end of the chimney, which extends out a couple of feet. The plan indicates the frame of the mural to be on the north wall exclusively, but somewhere there is a longitudinal section towar...

Re: Wright Post-Italy; Goethe Street and Taliesin I

Yes, the bird walk connects at the site, more or less; the photo is of a pre-fire vintage, so Taliesin as it stands now, is different from this angle. The Goethe mural is actually just an indication, as if to say "Place mural here." It consists of a very rough sketch of a landscape without...

Re: Wright Post-Italy; Goethe Street and Taliesin I

The main floor of the Goethe Avenue Project is in Hitchcock, Plate 190. The bedroom plan is identical to the 3rd floor plan; the living room can be imputed by the upper level plan; the dining room features a table protruding from the east wall, assuming the entrance of the house faces north. Somewhe...

Re: Alden Dow house for sale

For me, it was the reverse: At 6, I saw the Hedrick Blessing iconic photo of Fallingwater; some years later, I saw that wonderful photo of the Dow House. Two masterpieces set in water.

Also at Baghdad are the merchant kiosks. The project for Fiberthin Air Houses (1956) would count, too. Lastly, the helicopters fluttering above Broadacre.

Considering Siry's previous books on FLW, as well as Adler & Sullivan, he is one to be taken seriously.

Re: Two houses for sale on Prairie Style block in River Forest, IL

Bill Storrer published 2 books on the Williams St. houses. Interior colors all around were more along the lines of Prairie style, including the trim. These two houses seem almost to have been gutted and redesigned inside. I believe Bill used the books to strengthen his assertion that FLW had somethi...
