Re: Hanna House Table?

The price should reflect the lack of provenance, and reduced to perhaps $200? If the owner tried to get away with this on Antiques Road Show, the Keno twins would put an end to it quickly.

Maybe DIY, in most of those cases, should be HIY?

Re: List Of DIY/Self-Built Wright Houses?

I think that would be a short list. Other than Lovness, there would be Berger and Pappas, but offhand I cannot think of any others.

Re: Arthur R. Munkwitz duplex apartments windows

What may be a HABS drawing was taken directly from a FLW drawing. The same elevation, the upper units with mullioned sash and the lower units plain, in McArthur's book has a square with FLW's name at the bottom, plus "J-521" notation. There are also an elevation of the back, plans of the s...

Re: Video: Interview w/ apprentice Robert Rasmussen

Somehow I missed that interview the first time around. Very illuminating. Everyone I have ever known or met agreed that FLW was easy-going and humorous. Mr. Rasmussen simply reinforced that image.

megnar, do you have any images of your father-in-law's work you might like to share with us?

Re: Arthur R. Munkwitz duplex apartments windows

In Shirley duFresne McArthur's book, "FLW ASBH in Milwaukee," page 48A, there are elevations of Munkwitz. The street-facing façade indicates the same wood-mullioned windows shown in the 1924 photograph and toastedskin's posted photo, and are undoubtedly the original design. The mullioned w...

Re: Blog Post: The Gutter Myth and Wright's Frugal Side

SDR, that would be "FLW's Forgotten House," bottom of page one. FLW used the zig-zag substitute from early on. See the Longstreth book on Charnley, pp 165-6. He went to extremes to avoid a diagonal line in 'Le Grand Escalier.' The stair is actually structured straightforwardly, with the un...

Re: Blog Post: The Gutter Myth and Wright's Frugal Side

Paul, near the bottom of page 1 there is a post-FLW ASBH with a prominent downspout on the front of the house, referred to as the Bellows House.

Re: Bitter Root Inn history

St. Paul Pioneer Press has "numerous photographs of the [Bitter Root] Inn" in its morgue? That would be interesting. All I have ever seen of the building is the one exterior photo in Storer.

Re: Blog Post: The Gutter Myth and Wright's Frugal Side

There are countless myths about FLW, both architectural and personal. For instance, the "Lincoln" myth caught on and spread like wildfire. There is no support for it, and it came from the most untrustworthy of sources, Brendan Gill. Yet it is a good anecdote, so it still flourishes, and pr...

Re: Hugo Avila's Wright Renders

Avila and Romero have done wonderful things to many fantastic FLW works never realized. The Ennis House was realized, but in such an altered state that it qualifies as an unbuilt masterpiece. That's the one I am waiting to see given its due.

SDR, the photo of Hardy with the flag (enlarged) shows a texture that looks more like stucco than paint, but it might have been either.

Re: 1908 Hardy House Photos: Photo Proof Positive

The photo near the bottom of a little girl in front of one of the gates suggests, by the condition of the wood panel, that the stucco was probably a thin sheet covering the boards, removed early on, reveling original boards beneath.

Re: Hugo Avila's Wright Renders

Hein and Price, Sr. are both strung out in a manner not unusual for FLW. He tended to build houses one room deep, rather than clustered. Even the private family wing of Taliesin is a version of the same approach.
