Harold Turner certainly took a leap of faith when he agreed to build the Hanna House, and look where that experience took him. It wasn't taking on a responsibility so much as investing in a future which he could not reasonably have expected without the advantage of learning a new way of building. To...

Reminiscent of Eleanor Little Stephenson and her husband tearing down her parents' Northome to be replaced by a house of more modest dimensions in the style of a Norman Keep. I believe the Stephensons were in their 80s when that outrage was perpetuated.

Deke, one thing you should consider about the Gugg exhibition house: According to Geiger, who worked on the house, the height of the clerestories was necessitated by the large surrounding buildings that blocked much of the direct sunlight, which would have made the interior too dark with smaller win...

In the other thread, I believe it was SDR who wondered why the original approach to Taliesin was changed. That would be because the entrance to the house was moved. Originally, in 1911, the entrance was from the loggia directly into the living room, and the area northwest of the loggia was just a sm...

Going back to Prairie for a moment, the plan of DD Martin is a work of art in itself. Arriving in Buffalo in '85, I was met by a SUNY student to drive me to the house who, instead of holding up a sign with my name on it, had a placard with the Martin floorplan. He reasoned that if I didn't recognize...

Madlener has always intrigued me, but I've never seen any interior shots. I would also be interested in more information about Hugh Garden, of whom FLW spoke kindly.

The interior space in Emory is Griffin at his best. Notice the photo with the circular table; that looks like it's not an original part of the house.

There are some real structural arches at Marin in the approach tunnels. The two stories of arches and the third floor with its circles (should be inverted arches; Wes fooling with FLW's work posthumously again) are all non-structural. See "An Architecture For Democracy" by Aaron Green, pag...

The reason FLW placed a rooftop garden on Lamp was so the lake view could be enjoyed from the house, since at lower levels one has only views of neighboring houses. Condomania has got to be stopped. If cities were to require that all the infrastructure upgrades required for such massive projects as ...

The estimate to restore Taliesin was $30,000,000 in the mid-90s before many of the problems that exist were identified. What it will eventually prove to be is anyone's guess, but it will probably be 9 digits.

SDR, the area you show in blue is the current location of the stairs to the lower level. In addition to the bedrooms, which when I saw them in the 90s were in rough shape, there is a room under the living room, which was empty at that time. The narrow stairs near Mr. Wright's room accesses Iovanna's...

If you examine the design, it becomes clear that Mark Mills had a lot of input. You won't find much of that house at Arcosanti.

Paul, not all of Wells' houses were underground, including one he built for his own family, which is featured on the cover of HB, Oct '62. The article is titled, "It looks traditional - but is it?" written by Curtis Besinger.

Armstrong is a remarkable design without much relation to anything else that FLW did, except for the grammar of the materials. The closest design would be Manson, and that not much; Armstrong is much better. It's also one of those houses like Spencer and Suntop that has not been well-published.
