The photos of this house have been so deceiving- I couldn't reconcile the plan with the pictures until Educationprofessor sent me the link to Steiner. After you figure out the perf doors are not open in the pictures it makes sense. (Go all the way down to see several perf photos.) -Was the perf unit...

contemporary iteration of Usonian Automatic blocks

The Loom Studio designers have developed 12 concrete blocks with bas relief faces. The sculptural element is more basic than Wright's. The Pachinko block relates to McCartney relief somewhat. I like the Tornado relief especially. However there seems to be an assumption that the relief blocks will be...

Yes, Norton juston. I recognized the animation as also a book in my father's collection- a valentine to my mother. Although I saw it recently, I squirreled it away and haven't located it yet. As long as we are talking about dots- I hope everyone has seen the 1940 Norman Maclaren film DOTS where the ...

I'm looking through my shelves and drawers for Justor's book, a real touchstone for the period. I assume it came before the animation. Does any one know for sure?

Not an unimportant thread.... I asked an Acoustics Physics professor test & analyze the Weltzheimer House before I began house concerts there. I wanted guidance as I scheduled events. He found that the only real issue in the Usonian was the expanse of glass terrace doors. Unlike many other wall,...

Some say Wright adopted the term Usonian John Dos Passos used (as a capitalized adjective) to describe Wright's vision for the American City in The Big Money (1936). But the word was used long before that in a more general descriptive sense for "American".

Were there original Wright clients whose furniture aesthetic was alien to Usonian attributes?
or
Did Wright find a delicate balance using dominating built-ins so that the remaining personal free-standing furniture choices could vary yet not deny the overall Usonian aesthetic?

As interesting as speculating on appropriate furniture is, it brings up a slew of other thoughts: How can someone live in spaces and remain insensitive to their aesthetic demands? The disconnect is so strong and yet the occupants can be oblivious. Is the practical function of shelter so significant ...

Lodging much nearer can be found in Mineral Point, an historic mining village, about 20 miles south of Taliesin. The SW Wisconsin landscape is much more beautiful- glorious with free range cows and the rolling hills. (Close you eyes going through Dodgeville.) An added plus are the art and craft gall...

Paffard Keating-Clay

I recently read of Paffard Keating-Clay, another one-year Taliesin Apprentice. John Geiger dates his tenue 01/01/49 to 12/31/49). Is he mostly thought of as an eccentric Brutalist? Buildings like the 60s addition to the San Francisco Art Institute seem more interesting than the Brutalist buildings I...
