It brings out a few interesting facts, such as Wright's FBI file, but I found it, on the whole, a pretty poor book. Its two biggest problems are 1. Johnson does not have a book's worth of material in his purported subject, so he pads it out with a lot of irrelevancies, like the history of the Algonq...

The answer, I suspect, is that this is paid advertising by Amazon. If it brings money in for the Conservancy, I'm all for it.

Coonley, Hollyhock, Ennis and Freeman are other examples of houses whose fireplaces are not at the center of the plan.

This is nobody's first choice, but with the amount of piracy that goes on at this site (e.g. A boost for a Wright house ( Lamp House ), we can expect owners of intellectual property to protect themselves.

You might take a tip from the Clintons and rent out the guest room to big donors.

Apparently you don't have details of what the built-in looked like and you aren't sure it was Wright's. Build a model based on the dimensions you have and on others of the same period, put it in a glass case and do what's comfortable.

Goetsch-Winkler would be the one for me if you could do something about the weather. It's the right size, it's beautiful inside and out (more the latter), and it's in a beautiful setting. Apparently it's been well-restored in recent years and so doesn't have a lot of maintenance liabilities. Otherwi...

Yes, he lived and built in Michigan City for years. One of his works is, as I recall, a National Guard Armory near the lakefront. A local once took me around to see the buildings, including apartments and and several houses, but I don't know if they've been published or if a guide is available.

The amount of spam on this list has led me more and more to skip posts from unfamiliar contributors. Henceforth, if you want me to read your message you'd be wise to register and log in. (Some, I know, will find this a positive incentive to stay anonymous.)

You could probably get a client's name from the records of the applicable building department (unless they've destroyed the records).

Other sources that might be useful are a local historical society or a local or state Society of Architectural Historians or American Institute or Architects.

The main argument for requiring logins is that you are likelier to get the kind of posts you describe if you make this rule.

What is the word on Toker's book? He's too eager to find what he's already decided, and thus he draws stronger conclusions than his evidence will warrant, but has anyone found any serious inaccuracies? The lack of architectural examination doesn't bother me. We have so much good material on this alr...

Toker does not say that Edgar Jr. inflated his role in the creation of the house itself, but rather in its origins. He claimed that he discovered Wright through the Autobiography , went to Taliesin on his own initiative, introduced his parents to Wright and went along on the first site visit. Toker ...

Millard in Highland Park has a split-level entry hall, from which you go half a story either up or down to the rest of the house. I don't recall which level the living room is on, though.
