Re: Size of Windows?
That Gillen may be the large sheets I've seen in a Wright design. Patio doors with fields of glass are common in his work, as are grids of glass. I recall a substantial wall of glass in the Guggenheim, but rarely in a residence.

Size of Windows?
Did Wright ever design a wall of glass, as so many mid-century architects did? It seems his use of glass was in smaller panes, as part of a larger grid of frames. I can't think of a residence with floor to ceiling glass, though it was available in the late 40s and 50s. I wonder if that was simply a ...

Re: Aline Barnsdall Unbuilt House
Would Schindler have worked on this? Or was Wright done with the Imperial by then and back in Los Angeles?

Re: Who's going to Buffalo?
I'm also a bit concerned about the new covid variant. I registered knowing that a refund is possible by the end of August if the pandemic takes a sharp turn for the worse. I'm a bit more hesitant about booking hotel and flight as I'm not sure what the refund policy is.

Who's going to Buffalo?
I see the conference is in-person, in-Buffalo, and open to the public now. Is Buffalo a good location to visit? I can't seen another reason I'd ever travel there.

Re: Larry Woodin
What a shock. I traded emails with him just a few weeks ago with the idea of an event related to my book on Paul Kirk. He was kind enough to get me into the Tracy House some years ago when it was transitioning between owners.

Re: Samuel Freeman House for Sale
I can't imagine construction going on for 13 months....or longer. Must be one of the most agonizing construction projects of a Wright design. Does anyone know if the mitered glass is original? The period photo may be the only one I've seen that doesn't look like the corners by the window are deflect...

Re: Samuel Freeman House for Sale
Not an architect, but it seems that a reinforced concrete structure, with a veneer of tiles, would be the best way to go. Isn't that how such a home would be built today?

Re: Samuel Freeman House for Sale
My understanding is that USC received millions from FEMA for the stabilizing work. Perhaps the University needs to open its books on their management of the home and what they've spent on it. I can't see anyone paying $4M for a home that probably needs millions in repair. What's the going rate for a...

Re: Taschen book sale
I like the Case Study book...and was lucky enough to attend an event at it's release and have several architects (and Shulman) sign it! I understand Taschen makes smaller versions which might be easier to peruse.

Re: Samuel Freeman House for Sale
Was the home given to UCS? If it was, then I question the high price, even if they were paying property taxes on it all these years. Or is the high price an attempt to recoup what they've spent on the improved foundation of the house? And who should really buy and restore this place is The Getty. Th...

Re: Samuel Freeman House for Sale
Whatever happened to the Health House, or the Sturges House? Last I heard, the latter was going to be sold at auction with proof of funds to restore. I don't think that resulted in a new owner. Is the Health House in good hands? I don't believe it was anywhere near the condition of Freeman.

Re: Article: CBS Sunday Morning to air segment on Polymath Park
I checked out the CBS website and the reconstruction seems to be on a much flatter piece of land than the original. So there isn't a big wall around the patio as there is in the original construction. Is that correct? Seems that they could have sculpted the land to match the slope of the original si...

Re: My book on Paul Hayden Kirk is finally done!
Thanks for the order. The work of the Pacific Northwest is very undocumented...unlike Southern California where there are so many books on so many architects. I was spoiled in SoCal where there were always exhibitions, lectures, new books, and architecture tours going on. The audience of architectur...

Re: My book on Paul Hayden Kirk is finally done!
He was most known for his wood buildings, and you can see in McMahon a sort of dovetail joint to the balconies...rendered in concrete. The forms for the concrete also had varied strips of wood in them so the cast concrete resembled the wood siding he often used in his residential designs. He priorit...
