My book about restoring Glenbrow/Gunning House is out!
What started as a chronicle of the history I uncovered about Glenbrow (aka Gunning House) and our several year odyssey restoring the house from ruin, for my daughters and future owners, turned into a published narrative, Red Bird Against the Snow. During quarantine I was fortunate to have an ongoing...

Re: Well maintained Ted van Fossen 1957 house
I have a January 1941 letter from Mary Gunning to Tony Smith (courtesy of the Tony Smith Estate-thankfully he archived everything)expressing how much the house means to them and at the end it states "Give my regards to Ted and tell him those parts of the house where we sit and work and keep thi...

Re: Armstrong House for sale
SDR, I believe "gravity heat" was FLW's term for hydronic heating below concrete floors. I am not sure about the original systems, perhaps Dan would know the answer since he is both an architect and has dealt with an operational old system, but in our new "hydronic" system there ...

Re: Armstrong House for sale
SDR, We replaced the failed gravity heat by removing the concrete floor and replacing it with a modern 7 zone hydronic system. We absolutely LOVE it! We are toasty even on the coldest days. As was done at Armstrong, we also replaced all the plate glass as well. It was the failed gravity heat that fi...

Re: Armstrong House for sale
I since realized the Storrer piece above states that Howe replaced gravity heat with perimeter heat (and thermopane replaced 1/4" plate glass) so that explains the carpet. Too bad. I wonder how comfortable the house is in really cold weather. I recall the Weltzheimer House had perimeter heat an...

Re: Armstrong House for sale
This was the house that Tony Smith was the "Clerk of the Works" on just before they received the Gunning commission. Larry Cuneo worked as an apprentice on it with him and Ted van Fossen worked as a laborer (probably as a furniture maker). Beautifully maintained minus some of the more rece...

Re: Concrete floor / radiant heat experiences?
We purchased a "gravity heat" apprentice house that was designed in 1940 and had been abandoned for many years that had a failed heating system. Our restoration included removal of the concrete floor, leaving a six inch piece around the periphery to support structure as well as the floorin...
