There are TWO really nice exhibits on the work of Louis Sullivan now playing across the street from each other. One in the Cultural Center (old library) and one at the Art Institute. Both on Michigan Avenue. The one at the Cultural Center is free.

Kevin, Yes, I have been through the Robie knock-off and have extensive photos. I believe it is for sale for around $1.5million. The owner is a local commercial real estate developer. This house is not a "copy" of Robie on either the interior or exterior. I am not familiar with the Fallingw...

Mr. Harding, It was my impression from the tour guide that all of the furniture had been sold off many decades ago. So there would be no "contemporary" photos. Several of the original pieces are in various museums or private collections. You might want to contact Elizabeth Dunbar (elisabet...

We visited the Bradley House on Thursday. We had a nice tour and enjoyed the house very much. This is a very large house (6,000+sq ft). It is in fine shape for being over 100 years old. I encourage all of you to add this destination to your vacation itinerary.

SDR, I just learned that the term Vertical Grain is used for softwoods and Quarter Sawn is used for hardwoods. http://www.wardclapboard.com/about.html FTA: Quartersawing was commonly used in the 19th century to produce durable vertical grain clapboards. http://www.oldhouseweb.com/how-to-advice/old-h...

On the Cloverleaf Plan: Take the yard and carport and turn it into a two-car garage. Use the roof the the new garage unit as a Master Bedroom deck and increase the size of the module.

If any of you have had the "pleasure" of visiting Springfield, OH... you will know that the "context" is just a small step up from Gary, IN. Please don't assume from this comment that I don't think the Westcott House is great. I just wish they would put some furniture in it so it...

DRN: Did you happen to count the number of rows of shingles between each "batten" ? It would seem that a piece of 8" bevel siding would be easier to use than ripping a 1x4. I saw a commercial building that used a row of lighter colored shingles every so often to create a somewhat simi...

This house was designed for Don Erickson's father while Don was with Wright at Taliesin. If I remember correctly it was his first house.
