Yeah--think WrightPlus does a good job too. You sometimes feel like cattle being rushed to the feed or to the slaughter, but what else can be done with the crush of people? Sensitive areas are roped off, plastic covers carpets and traffic areas, tour guides scattered throughout the house minimize an...

forgive me, for I don't have my Storrer in front of me, but I seem to recall that one of the Western homes has a space designed for a piano--almost a triangular outcropping, clearly visible from outside, in the middle of the living room. Maybe the house in Wyoming? I seem to recall reading in the St...

Taliesin I picture

Here is a link to a very interesting picture of Taliesin I, from a newspaper article about the Mamah Cheney controversy. http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j254/cobb11/11-2%20Listings/Wright19117.jpg I've never seen this view before. The mix between the vertical chimney stack, crossed twice on the wa...

San Fran Gift Shop

I visited the gift shop/gallery at the end of July. Stayed for an hour--took numerous pictures. even bending down to get shots of the furniture legs. Staff couldn't have been nicer. And the building is glorious--you'll love seeing it. From pictures, the design had always seemed a bit cold to me, alm...

Thanks, RG. I like that formulation of Wright + whomever. My version would be something like "INSERT ARCHITECT's NAME HERE, inspired by an original FLW design." I have no objections to the legacy program itself--I'm happy to see TA try out ideas from old plans. My objections are merely to ...

jester house

Specifically on the Jester house, and whether it is appropriate for the lines of the desert, Storrer claims that Wright offered the design to a Dr. Palmer for a Phoenix site in 1947 (http://www.franklloydwrightinfo.com/wrightxtaa.html). Is that accurate?

This takes the thread in a different direction, but the conversation seems to be turning that way, regarding the placement of fireplaces. The fireplace in Ennis, in particular, has always disturbed me, especially because of Wright's emphasis on the hearth's importance as the heart of the home. It se...

Guestnow--Thanks for the information. But I'm puzzled that the set designer saw that as swanky 50's interior. When I think swanky 50's I think more of the Matt Helm films (or were those early 60's?). Those lines seemed a bit clean to be "swanky."

It did not appear to be a soundstage, but I doubt it was pure Usonian, as far as size. It did have a number of Wright influences, including the fireplace and mantle (A single, concrete shelf inserted into the brick). But it also had a number of elements suggesting work by an admirer or apprentice (f...

I should have added this link, to the photographer's web page, on which two photos of that space appear, but in better color.

This is a link to an interesting photo of the "guts" of unity temple. The shot appears to be of the space above the skylights in the worship side of the building.
