Re: Architect Breaks Down Why Movie Villains Live In Ultra-Modern Houses

Some cases in point that precede NXNW are The Kiss (Garbo, 1929) and They Drive by Night (Bogart, 1940). They feature high-deco interior sets, which might or might not qualify as architecture. We've talked previously about The Black Cat.

Re: North By Northwest Movie - Phillip VanDamm House (updated 4/30/22))

There are actually 2 movies named "The Black Cat" featuring Bela Lugosi (but not Boris Karloff). The 1941 movie also stars Alan Ladd and Broderick Crawford. There is also a mansion, but not modern. Imagine, Broderick Crawford in a comedy!

... residence for a villain would be the sets for "The Black Cat" (1934, Universal) directed by Edgar Ulmer, starring Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff. Karloff plays architect/satanist Hjalmar Poelzig. There are at least 5 movies titled "The Black Cat." I assume you meant the Boris Karloff/Bela Lugosi version of 1934, rather than Broderick Crawford's effort of 1941?

I saw HOHH in 1959. Once was enough.

(BTW: The Ennis gates are bronze, not wrought iron.)

... with Ruth Chatterton. There are two old movies titled "The Black Cat"; I believe the one shot at Ennis is from 1934 with Boris Karloff. The 1941 movie with Broderick Crawford was not at Ennis, although Bela Lugosi was in both films. "The Terminal Man" is an excellent ...

Edgar Ulmer's 1934 "The Black Cat" with Karloff and Lugosi contains no images of modern architecture except those designed for the movie, which is set in an unnamed middle-European country. The one long shot of the house on a hill at night ...

It was the Karloff/Lugosi movie. To judge from the stills I've seen, it only showed a distance shot, and that may not have been the real thing.

A model of the Ennis entry side was in Female, 30s or 40s.

... above, "The Black Cat," as it was a favorite of mine from the moment it appeared on the family TV c. 1956. Modern architecture, Boris Karloff, Bach on the organ -- this one had it all, for me ! But it bears no direct connection to Wright. Director Edgar Ulmer was a set designer who ...
