When we stayed at the Palmer House, the archival material (can't remember if in a folder or a book) said that FLW had recommended Spode India Tree for the house. Which greatly interested me, as I have a set of this, inherited from an aunt! It would pick up the color of the floors beautifully, but is...

House Walks

We have gone to Wright Plus for years, and to Wright and Like for the last two years. We always have a lovely time. As already noted, it's a rare chance to see the interior of private Wright homes. Wright Plus is crowded, with long lines to see the houses. They keep you to a fairly brisk pace once y...

Dana Sconces and Auldbrass Chair at Auction

Sotheby's is offering for sale two sconces from the Dana Thomas House. I don't recall noticing any missing scones on my tours of the house. Does anyone know where they came from? Also up for auction is a chair from the Auldbrass Plantation and a Wasmuth Portfolio, if you have an extra $30,00 to $50,...

Manson still for sale, too

All of this discussion of the McCartney house made me curious about another Usonian that was on the market a couple of years ago in a similar price range. It appears that the Manson house, in Wausau, WI is still on the market for the same price it was in January, 2008. Here's the listing link: http:...

McCartney House

How, in your opinion(s) does this house compare to the Pratt House in nearby Galesburg? I was a bit surprised that it was on the market for 2 or 3 years at a price in the $325,000 range. Any ideas on why it took so long to sell? It appears to be in excellent condition.

Like you, we did find the inn, as a hotel, less than fabulous. For the price, they need to take the amenities up a few notches. I hear the restaurant wasn't very good. But we enjoyed inhabiting the space of the apartment, having a drink on the lit balcony at night, and touring the building.

On langauge

Fascinating topic. I love the way that it has grown and morphed (dare one say "organically"?) from its original gently scolding complaint to a philosophical discourse on language. Language is itself a growing, evolving thing, and English will continue its organic evolution whether we like ...

Thanks so much SDR for posting the photos. We visited Oklahoma last weekend and took exterior photos of the house. I had a hard time visualizing the interior...it's enormous. We, too, stayed at the Price Tower. It was a wonderful experience staying in one of the two-story apartments and taking the t...

Does anyone know whether there are typically lectures or any special events on opening night/weekend? We're trying to decide whether to go on opening weekend or wait until later in May, when I understand the Metropolitan's American Decorative Arts section, with the Little House living room, will reo...

A source for my "dubious at best" statement: http://www.mlive.com/businessreview/annarbor/index.ssf/2008/08/ann_arbors_frank_lloyd_wright.html "Ed Surovell, owner of Surovell Realtors, said he was optimistic about the home being sold, even considering the potential challenges. "T...

Palmer House

I'm not surprised. This property is not being sold as a home. The covenants are so restrictive that the only possible use for the house is as a museum. You would not even be allowed to put your own books on the bookcases.

Pappas House

My apologies. I inadvertently posted the application for the Kraus House. Here, if I'm not mistaken, is the one for the Pappas:

Wright Rentals

I'm so excited to hear about the continued restoration plans for the Schwartz house. This is absolutely my favorite rental. It is such a livable house, and we so enjoyed watching the interplay of light as it changed throughout the day. Looks like we'll have to pay another visit!

Pappas House

There was a recent article in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on the 10 most endangered architectural masterpieces in the city. As I recall, Pappas was number 10. I, too, have heard that the family is not interested in the property. The main issue is that it is located on a very valuable 4 acres in a ve...

Dana closing

Those letters seem to be working. Here's a story on protests regarding the Dana-Thomas House and other state sites being closed.
