Re: Article: Eichler homes

The vocabulary around race and ethnicity has many twists and turns---around the world, in any culture (or between any two cultures), I imagine. Just look at the changes in how African-Americans have been referred to, over the last century-and-a-half . . . Then there's "I can call myself that, but yo...

Re: Bach, continued

The shortish video linked at the end of the performance, wherein the conductor and various performers comment on the work and their interpretation of it, is worth a watch for those interested. van Veldhoven acknowledges his departures from standard practice, in particular the paring down of vocal fo...

Re: Bach, continued

Gardiner brings us to the Mass in B Minor, in a chapter titled "The Habit of Perfection." "Perfection is achieved, it seems, not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away." ---after Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Terre des Hommes (1939), reads the epigraph. Here is an...

Re: FLW Designed Usonian Cat House (Not Cathouse) For Sale

Thanks for those links, Doug. Now I have an idea of who Tom Olson is.

That house is a marvel. I wonder who owns it now . . .

Re: E Fay Jones houses

Without Frank Lloyd Wright, what would E Fay Jones's work have looked like ? It's impossible to know. We can only be grateful for what we see . . .

Re: FLW Designed Usonian Cat House (Not Cathouse) For Sale

Thanks so much for this one, Dan. It is always refreshing to have a record set straight---in this case, straight from the horse's mouth, as it were, and well said too.

The remaining and inevitable follow-up question: who is Mr Olson, and what do we know about him ?

Re: rain chains

Thanks, Bill---don't know why I didn't ask you sooner about this commission. Top of a long-time list of questions: are there pictures or other information about the Woodson residence ?

Re: rain chains

A last detail I can report: inside the upper-story offices, the first two or three feet of the overhead inside the windows is a continuation of the exterior roof structure and (from a distance) cladding, before a wood-trimmed white dropped ceiling takes over. One has the impression of Bohlin Cywinsk...

Re: rain chains

Good questions. You could argue that there's less metal per foot with long links---unless the gauge is larger ? The building is there; I've not learned who designed it. A neighboring building was constructed a few years later, mimicking the form but in conventional material and detailing---a sorry p...

Re: Video: Millard House - Pasadena, CA

Everything Wright does is for scale. Look at a photo of the upper terrace at Fallingwater, taken on a visitor day: the parapet comes to mid-thigh on an adult human.

Re: rain chains

I watched the Woodson Building come into being in the early 1980s, in downtown San Rafael., California. The rain chains were just one of the charms of this office building, which echoes a Craftsman/Asian aesthetic. Paired rafters, visible within the glass line, support a red-tiled roof with generous...

Re: The Martin House's Reintegration of Art Glass Continues

Even naked it would be a magnificent house. But the phrase "gilding the lily" isn't heard when discussing Wright's "light screens": the more Wright the better (as long as he put it there himself) seems to be the universal sentiment. In that vein, I'm sorry to have to say that I regret the post-Wrigh...
