Re: Who's going to Buffalo?

Public education was inaugurated to teach "3R" basic skills plus - most importantly - civics. That held the Republic together for 189 years, without the need for a single standard imposed by the federal government. When a central government is vested with too much power, it eventually fails. We are ...

Re: Who's going to Buffalo?

The opposite is true. Public education fell apart in '65 when the Fed took control. There's no way 330 million citizens can be adequately controlled to their benefit by a single central government. (Ben Franklin warned this would happen: "A republic, if you can keep it.") Control by DC has resulted ...

Re: Game of Thrones

Rood, 60 years ago, as Brasilia was evolving, there were many scathing articles written about it, which obviously got a lot of details wrong. It was characterized as being in the hot, humid jungle, deliberately located far enough away from Rio to encourage the population to move inland, rather than ...

The office for Edgar Kaufmann, Sr. has its own book; the Aaron Green office should have one, too. We all know about it, but there must be details yet to be published?

After 30 years of observation, I have concluded that every decision Taliesin makes is to ensure the security of the members who have been there (some) going back over 70 years. My guess is that David Dodge is the oldest of the crew, and Indira probably the youngest. Once they are all gone, and now t...

Re: Article: Brizo FLW Bath Collection

Bach In Drag is more popular (on radio, at least) than the magnificent original. My favorite bathroom appliance is Kohler's Darth Vader Black Toilet that was on display in the traveling Usonian Automatic years ago. There can be sensitive reinterpretations of great art. For instance, Vincent Van Gogh...

Re: Game of Thrones

Brasilia and Chandigarh are proof that the "all of a piece" approach to city planning is a failure. Both cities, as originally built, should have been blasted off the planet. I'm sure that, over the years, people with their messiness, have given both places a patina that has soften them, but still.....

ndhayes, Perhaps you already are aware, but if there is information you would like to have concerning Russell Barr Williamson, Barbara Elsner would be a good source. She no longer lives in the Bogk House, but her daughter does, and may connect you to her.

I'm unimpressed. This looks like a fad that, 10 years down the line, interior decorators will denigrate the way they scoff at Golden Harvest and Avocado refrigerators of the 60s.

Re: Trouble at the Parthenon

I agree with the critics. At the very least, the walkway could have been more carefully integrated into the environment. Hauling people up to the acropolis to begin with should also have been done with greater care. Greece is obviously catering to the tourist crowd. The Parthenon has not in any way ...

Well, now, Tom, one must ask what was a banana peel doing in a tree?

Choate fell off a ladder while cleaning clerestory windows. He will ever after set off alarm bells at airports.
