Re: Well maintained Ted van Fossen 1957 house

I have a January 1941 letter from Mary Gunning to Tony Smith (courtesy of the Tony Smith Estate-thankfully he archived everything)expressing how much the house means to them and at the end it states "Give my regards to Ted and tell him those parts of the house where we sit and work and keep things a...

Re: Well maintained Ted van Fossen 1957 house

This is the original Wakefield House (Dick and Martha Wakefield were the developers with Ted van Fossen as the designer of the community of ~ 50 organic modernist homes in Rush Creek Village in Worthington OH) Note the bas relief on image 8 and on the door on image 23. van Fossen had worked as a car...

Re: Armstrong House for sale

SDR, I believe "gravity heat" was FLW's term for hydronic heating below concrete floors. I am not sure about the original systems, perhaps Dan would know the answer since he is both an architect and has dealt with an operational old system, but in our new "hydronic" system there is no water but inst...

Re: Armstrong House for sale

SDR, We replaced the failed gravity heat by removing the concrete floor and replacing it with a modern 7 zone hydronic system. We absolutely LOVE it! We are toasty even on the coldest days. As was done at Armstrong, we also replaced all the plate glass as well. It was the failed gravity heat that fi...

Re: Armstrong House for sale

I since realized the Storrer piece above states that Howe replaced gravity heat with perimeter heat (and thermopane replaced 1/4" plate glass) so that explains the carpet. Too bad. I wonder how comfortable the house is in really cold weather. I recall the Weltzheimer House had perimeter heat and the...

Re: Armstrong House for sale

This was the house that Tony Smith was the "Clerk of the Works" on just before they received the Gunning commission. Larry Cuneo worked as an apprentice on it with him and Ted van Fossen worked as a laborer (probably as a furniture maker). Beautifully maintained minus some of the more recent design ...

Re: Concrete floor / radiant heat experiences?

We purchased a "gravity heat" apprentice house that was designed in 1940 and had been abandoned for many years that had a failed heating system. Our restoration included removal of the concrete floor, leaving a six inch piece around the periphery to support structure as well as the flooring over the...

Re: Question regarding Ellis Feiman House

Thanks, SDR. I thought I recalled reading about this house. My intent in a new post was in hopes that the owner would be made aware of the photos posted in this abandoned building group. There were quickly over 200 responses and several tags. Having witnessed the damage that trespassing can do with ...

Question regarding Ellis Feiman House

Hope this finds all in good health. I have a question regarding the the Ellis Feiman House in Canton Ohio. I belong to an Abandoned Homes, Buildings and Structures of Ohio FB group and today photographs of the FLW Ellis Feiman House appeared on this site. Is this house abandoned? It doesn't appear t...

Re: New furniture fabrication for Glenbrow

Thanks! I really love it. I cut out a row on ceiling mounted light during construction when we were so over budget and lived to regret it. This really helps and it's nice that it is on a rheostat. SDR, We used LED lighting throughout to be more energy efficient. Since we prefer warm lighting, The LE...

New furniture fabrication for Glenbrow

I hope everyone is doing well. We are fortunate to be spending quarantine at Glenbrow especially during spring! Now with Joe retired, he has been keeping busy designing/fabricating furniture. Our most recent piece (my Mother's Day present) is a Wright inspired LED light fixture for our living room w...

Re: House near Rush Creek Village for sale

Good eye Roderick, you are correct! That "something wrong", is a builder's interpretation. The realtor replied that the original owners said it was a Wakefield design, not Ted van Fossen.
