A co-worker of mine has recently registered to attend this conference. He has begged me on a number of occasions to go with him, however, I've chosen to get married instead (!) and I won't be attending as a result (but looking forward to my visit to the Zimmerman house on the honeymoon!). He claims that is a poor excuse for not attending.

Some of you might be interested, so I will see if I can't get a hold of some of the course material / descriptions because, from what he has told me, it will be a magnificent opportunity -- one that shouldn't be missed for anyone with an interest! I'll also let you know about his experiences when he returns and makes me incredibly jealous with all his FLW-related stories and photographs.

my fear is that without those staff members who were recently fired, (who, by the way, organized last years successful conference as well as arranged for this years speakers) the conference is going to be an organizational disaster. It will be interesting to hear the post-conference comments....

For those unfamiliar with the work of David Hovey there is a great

book available with many magnificent photos of his work. While 'In the

Nature of Buildings' is a little light on text the photos are well worth the

relatively modest price.

If Wright had chosen to express steel this is perhaps the sort of thing

he would have done. As is stands Hovey melds the organic soul of

Wright with the structural precision of Mies. These comments are specifically in reference to the high end houses Hovey has created in

Scottsdale, Arizona. One can only hope he will someday turn his talents toward the creation of single family dwellings for those of more modest means.

Correction. 'In the Nature of Dwellings'. Sorry about that!

Hovey's work is interesting, very clean; but the budgets for such work make Wright look like a piker!
