This house should be appraised as a small business with gross revenues of around $90K, not a residence.

"It is being offered for sale as either a private residence or an ongoing tourist destination" (last line of text).

The ad mentions an adjoining parcel that was the site for Wright's last residential design. What design was that? I thought his last design was that home in Scottsdale that Mr. Rattenbury completed based on FLW's sketch.

There are 12 buildings listed in Mono 8 for 1959, only two of which were built, Grady Gammage and Lykes. The last 3 entries in Volume 8 are Penfield Project (which was to have been built by the client), Lykes and Erdman Pre-Fab #3, a modest 1-story cottage. The exact order of completion of each of these 12 commissions is anyone's guess, but the last one built was Gammage, done by TAA after FLW's death in a much-altered design.

Taschen III shows twenty projects for the year 1959. There are photos only of Grady Gammage and Norman Lykes. Drawings for a triangle-module house for Dr John Mann (Putnam County, NY) are particularly interesting . . .

The houses shown for that year, unbuilt except for Lykes, are:

5901 "The Donohoe Triptych"

5913 Prefab #3, "Erdman Homes"

5907 Harvey Furgatch

5805 Dr James F Gutierrez

5824 Three cottages for Don Lovness (C, shown, is the Maginel Wright Barney design)

5908 Norman Lykes

5902 Dr John Mann

5909 Louis Penfield house, scheme 2

5905 Gilbert H Wieland

5906 Daniel A Weiland

If nothing else, the difference in number of listings for the last year of Wright's life shows that the Monographs do not contain a complete list of the work ?

I am surprised that the Penfield II house hasn't been shown here. It is an exciting design where you enter from above and descend to the main floor. The Living Room is triangular in shape, and opens out to a view of the river.

I thought it was the last design completed before Mr. Wright's passing. The Penfields were afraid that the construction of the interstate would be too close to their first house, so they asked Mr. Wright to design a second house. Influence from the neighbors caused the highway to be built a little further north, so the second house wasn't built.

At 5916, a music building for Arizona State University bears the last Taliesin file number, according to the Taschen set. How these numbers were chosen is not clear to me; note that a couple of the 1959 projects bear 58__ numbers . . .

So large an entry ... and odd to me how the stair leads straight to the dining table.

More than I can afford, but certainly worth the money for the existing house (a delight, particularly if Laurie Virr, BBuck, Palli, dtc, and the Penfields are there with you, thanks Laurie), the acreage, and the proposed house design. Where else could one buy a fully restored Usonian, plus an untouched Wright site with the prints for the intended unbuilt design all in one package?
