The pic of Wright "hangin at the mall" at the bottom of the article is priceless. If only he could have had an "Orange Julius" in his hand....
His statement about the garden court "having all the evils of the village street and none of its charm" says it all.

Southdale had enormous impact, and was the first of the 'Dales': Chip 'n' Dale, Roy 'n' Dale, etc. that provided Garrison Keeler with ammunition. I loved it, and have never encountered a shopping center as well designed (by Victor Gruen, for whom several Taliesin Apprentices worked over the years). The "evils of the village street" in Minnesota included brutal weather, summer as well as winter, which made Southdale hugely successful. Though now, with Edina laws rolling up the sidewalks at 9 PM, Southdale is in peril.
