Very early in the life of the Fellowship it became a tradition for apprentices to make or design something to be presented to Mr. Wright on his birthday. The tradition continued after his death, when designs were presented to and informally commented on by Mrs. Wright, Wes Peters, and other members of the Staff. I'm unaware if the tradition continued after the dissolution of TAA.
Some few Box Projects remain at Taliesin West ... for instance, the abstract nail-sculpture designed by Bill Schwarz is attached to a stone wall in the Pavilion ... next to the seating area ... put there at the request of Mrs. Wright.
PS: Can't help you with information about Box Projects in the Quarterly Magazine, however.
Price Tower Arts Center - Fellowship: 75 Years of Taliesin Box Projects - [1:46]
Also, the "Journal of Taliesin Fellows" - Issue #039, Winter 2013 has an article titled "Designing the perfect gift - Taliesin apprentice box projects."
And, issue #042, Spring 2014 has an article titled "Current Apprentice Box Projects: Irakiza, Edgar; Knox, Daniel; Moncayo, Pablo."
Currently, this is the only version of the Summer 2010 issue of the Frank Lloyd Wright Quarterly that I see for sale. But, it is being sold as part of a lot of 8 issues.
But she didn't analyze why they had to be done.
