The exterior expression of the building clearly owes much to the work of H H Richardson, though it may be that the latter had not yet adopted some of the technical improvements found in this building, at the date of its construction.

One rues the loss, nevertheless, of the even more robust (and virtually unadorned) Marshall Field Wholesale Store of two or three years earlier . . .

None of that affects the quality of the improvements made by Mr Wright to the interior of the Rookery Building, certainly.
