Emerson's quote from his 1841 essay, "Self-Reliance," is: "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds." FLW referred to the quote (according to which he fashioned his entire life) in, I believe, "A Testament."

I once had a studio with a design professor who would say "Symmetry is the hobgoblin of little minds."

How do you read that poem ? Is Whitman speaking directly to his reader, from the page to his or her mind and eyes, in "real time," moment by moment ? SDR

One line at a time .... but, no, at nearly 60 pages it's a very long poem ...., but see:

Symmetry may be simplistic -- but it is nevertheless the default form for the vast majority of nature's creations, not least the human form. We design cars
and planes and ships to be bilaterally symmetrical not only because they work better that way but because they seem right for a world populated with whales
and tigers and butterflies . . .

Asymmetry is a choice; symmetry is the default. The mammalian heart is asymmetrically placed, as is the vehicle's driver, within a symmetrical envelope.
The two coexist comfortably, as Wright demonstrated over and over.

This is why FLW referred to bilateral symmetry as "obvious symmetry." While not bilateral, FLW's designs always evinced a balance that could be defined as implicit symmetry. The west façade of Barnsdall is bilaterally symmetrical, while the east façade is FLW's own redefinition of symmetry.
