Two mid-rise developments rising next to Wright’s Hollyhock House in L.A.

The property is a schlock mini-mall now. I doubt that anyone will miss it.

I think the only real concern will be the height. Both properties that will be replaced will be upgraded by the new development. The easternmost of the pair, which will sit on land once part of the Barnsdall Estate, is in a direction that is today blocked from view by a grove of historic olive trees; I suspect it will be barely visible at all. But there are other nearby properties where a similar structure could have a detrimental impact on the viewshed, and any time one new structure goes in, it serves as precedent for the next.

This was inevitable. Both properties have been easy targets for redevelopment for decades. When the city acquired the car wash that was just east of the 4850 lot, as part compensation from the county for using the lot as access to construct the new subway, they should have come up with the gilt to buy the corner lot as well. FLW's master plan called for a theatre, similar to the one he designed for Tokyo, but for motion pictures, to be at that corner. Next to that, the entrance to Hollyhock, then a row of shops/studios for artists along the boulevard to the corner of Vermont, where there was to be an apartment building for visiting actors. Too bad Aline flaked out before building any of it.

The 4900 lot across Edgemont has been an eyesore for a long time.
