It sounds as though the endgame may have been reached for the Lockridge Clinic. A town with no preservation program (nor requirement for demolition permits) and an owner who claims he didn't even know Wright had designed his new building. I fear this one will soon be lost.

Historic Building May Be Headed Toward Demolition

"...the first viable Wright-designed building to be lost in more than 40 years."
Well, not so much. W. S. Carr House was worse for wear, but salvageable. The ASB house in Gary, IN that was torched could have been saved. The Sullivan House swept to its death by Hurricane Kristina was a loss, even if its provenance cannot be verified. Three structures of little significance, but of at least as much as Lockridge.

As I understand it, a viable FLLW building is one that has not burned (Wyant), been racked by a hurricane (pick one), or remuddled and decayed beyond repair (WSCarr, Grand Beach, MI). The Hoffman Showroom in NYC, lost a few years ago, technically wasn’t a building, just an interior fit-out.

The “viable” modifier was added by the Conservancy a few years ago to address these losses in their statement that they have not let a Wright building be demolished since their inception ca.1988. The Little house was demolished in 1972.

For those locked out, the S F Chronicle piece linked by Pat; it appears to recap the previous reports.

So, is $100,000 a reasonable profit for a speculator to expect, on a 1.6M-dollar two-year commercial-property deal ?

Blair Kamin does his research, and nicely makes up for perceived previous failings . . . ?
