Usually I don't spend much time perusing a "Best Books of the Year" insert in the Sunday paper, but this week's has a few that stand out.

1. "Bridges: A History of the World's Most Spectacular Spans" by Judith Dupre
"... this cleaver book is read spine-up in a panoramic, landscape format to showcase each bridge's full horizontal span." (I doubt it includes FLW's unbuilt project for Pittsburgh, but his engineering has become very popular in recent years.)

2. "Postmodern Design: Complete Design, Furniture, Graphics, Architecture, Interiors" by Judith Gura
"The 80s are back!" (That may be a troubling description. It may also be a Gothic novel.)

3. "Trousdale Estates: Midcentury to Modern in Beverly Hills" by Steven M. Price
"Peek inside the 410-acre enclave with current and archival photos of homes built primarily in the 1950s and 60s by seminal midcentury architects such as Lloyd Wright, Wallace Neff, Paul R. Williams and A. Quincy Jones." (I doubt FLW's Doheny Project will get more than a nod, but it may still be interesting. Most of the houses in Trousdale are, as one might expect from vastly wealthy residents, less than stellar.)

4. "Why Poetry" by Matthew Zapruder
"Zapruder doesn't think poetry should be dissected in a search for its meaning. Instead he contends in this accessible defense and salutation of poetry, an understanding of a poem comes to life anew in the mind of each half-dreaming reader." (Substitute architecture, sculpture, music or any other art for poetry, and the argument holds. And it's about time!)
