The old photos taken shortly after construction show that the exterior stucco job was much crisper than what exists today. At some point, the entire exterior must have been re-troweled, and not very well.

The interior still has that RMS magic.

Rough plaster or smooth, Schindler's work while under the influence (?) of Neutra must have seemed somewhat undisciplined to the latter.
If so, he might have missed what RMS was doing. While both men at this point could be said to be working in an international mode a la Cali-
fornie,
only Schindler's work could be said to reflect De Stijl ...

Neutra touches taken up by RMS include details like the flush ceiling lighting strips. But I don't think we see Neutra using lath strips as exterior
decking ! Photos I took at the C C Fitzpatrick house (also 1936) show this decking up close; a vintage shot of the house appears to show the
translucent effect that this treatment produces, in daylight.

(I believe that's a wire trellis, not a clothes-drying apparatus ...!)

. .

At Walker an early photo reveals the same use of lath-like decking, this time running parallel with the length of a
skinny exterior deck; in a color photo this has been replaced with spaced boards of more normal dimensions ...

For those you are on Instagram, the current owner, Andrew Romano has two wonderful accounts: one: the_walker_house and the other: andrew_romano. Both are a treasure trove of images not only of his beautiful Schindler house but of many other important works of architecture! I highly recommend following these accounts!

Andrew also wrote a book that came out last year on The Walker House. I searched on amazon, but it is out of stock there and someone is offering it for $295. I found it at a small distributor online here for anyone interested for the price I paid, $36:
