Ah. There's usually something staring me right in the face . . . !

Would the spiral stair also provide an alternate exit from the building ? That might explain (to an extent) why it is so open . . .

Haven't read my Smith book in awhile -
but it seems like the Hanna House and Wright's hexagonal modular plans in particular had a lasting impact on his art.
Unusual to see that combination from organic to abstract ...
or are there other examples?

I was informed that this house is about to go on the market, when it does I will post a link- additional photographs might reveal some answers.

For those interested in reading more about Tony Smith's influences besides Wright, the MOMA catalogue, "Tony Smith: Architect-Painter-Sculptor" is a good resource which is now available online:

Wow ! Thanks . . . and as a bonus, an example of MoMA's impeccable graphic design . . .

Once you have coordinated a hexagon with a square, on paper, it's only a matter of time before you are inspired to, and prepared for, this kind of work...?

This sculpture is the size of architecture.
I would say that Wright's work,
or the Hannah House in particular
had a profound and lasting impact on Smith.
