Or... the “All hat and no cattle”:

Close but no cigar...

I have always hated hats. They give me a headache. But in my dotage, with hair having diminished to a white incident on my head, it is probably a wise thing to take up the habit to avoid actinic keratosis of the pate. I would like to have that $1,500 pork pie, but 'tain't gonna happen. $11.31 sounds much better.

Across my computer screen floated, as part of the Mac screen-saver app called Snapshots, a bit of text (from some unidentified file on my hard drive) beginning with the question, "Had he ever gotten the roof put up first ?"

Well, there's no such thing as identifying any of these Snapshots while they are onscreen; they appear and then are gone. So I went looking for a possible source for this interesting quote.

In Tafel's "About Wright" I instead found this, a part of H-R Hitchcock's reminiscence:

"And of course everyone knows that Mr Wright dressed in a very special fashion. Some people say that he dressed as though it were the 1890s. But I don't think anyone has ever dressed quite like he did. His clothes were
special. I don't know where they all came from, but those very strange hats were specially produced by a French hatter in the Place Vendôme. Since Wright was rarely ever in his life in Paris, I don't know how this connection
was established. But of course those broad-brimmed hats were not at all in the Texas manner---they were the French hatter's idea of what a Western hat should be..."

SDR, you don't need to go to Europe to shop there. My dad always wore made-to-fit Italian shoes, yet never set foot over the pond.

Yes. Perhaps H-R H was just showing off...?

Close. Much more economical than the $1500.00(!) Optimo hat, but only available in “brick”, or “granite”:

https://www.delmonicohatter.com/product/30001BH.htm

https://www.neweditionfashion.com/products/walsh-pork-pie-hat-1

Brim is not as rolled up, and the ribbon band is too wide, for starters.
