Aalto's sanatorium was a frequent point of discussion in design studios and in an Environmental Systems course I took at CMU in the 1980's. The central design theme of the hospital was patient access to natural light and air circulation. From the building's siting and arrangement of discrete elements, to the design of the offset active sashes of its double wall glazing system, every priority was focused on the sun and sky's light and the natural movement of air through a building that was meant to provide comfort and nurturing to its users.

This building deserves to be preserved if a suitable new use/user can found.

Credit Aalto as a forward-looking detailer -- if the glass on that interior stair is original -- at the least: it would pass today's building codes, wouldn't it ? And the Paimio
Chair, while looking forward to other northern European as well as American designs, itself seems to hark back to Asian, Craftsman and/or Secessionist formal roots --
while of course demonstrating amazing technical, functional and aesthetic originality ?
