Oh, my.
A miraculous survivor, shown naked except for a suspended swordfish and a curious metal fireplace fitment in the original opening (?).
Wouldn't you love to know what the diagonal markings on the main-space floor are about ?

So strange!... But somehow I feel that the place has possibilities, especially if there would be some original drawings or photographs available to study.
801 Lathrop Ave Racine WI 53405
The rest of the neighborhood almost looks like “Father Knows Best” could have been shot there. Pleasantville, or Anytown, USA. |

Another street-side pitched-roof residence, likewise placed among more conventional neighbors, that we've seen from this architect -- also for his own
use ? -- appeared here a couple of years ago; it displays advances placing it leaps and bounds beyond this little tyke. There's a yearning, here, for the
sophistication that was to come . . .

I had a friend who hung out with JRM's daughter and used to visit this house. He made quite a few jokes about an architect who designed a house that would CONSTANTLY leak, due to a continuous slope glazing strip on the south side, above the clerestories. Evidently a subsequent owner simply eliminated the sloped glazing with boards and roofing.

Thanks for a "better times" photo, John. It would be fine to see JRM's drawings of this house, wouldn't it.
How do you read the gap in the top-most board, near the side-wall corner ? Is there a planter there . . .?
We were briefly in touch with the worthy who guards the architect's reputation and perhaps the remains of his office; I'd have to go back a ways to find his name.

SDR, I believe that is a marlin.
It's a curious little thing. A bit over the top, by an architect who obviously hadn't yet hit his stride. The 'fireplace' is indeed curious, but looks like it may not have been an original element. |

Looks like it would be a very fun and versatile house to furnish and live or work in....lose the fish and wall stove, add some Nelson pendant lamps, some modern furniture with colorful fabrics... |

So, any guesses about those hockey-stick ghosts on the floor ? Former partitions ? Floor treatments ? Levels . . . ?

Without knowing for certain one way or another, I would guess they are designs unto themselves, just as the boards on the exterior walls run higgledy-piggledy. The parallel lines seem to be about 4' apart, running at a very sharp angle to the flooring and walls, too close together to have marked partitions. |

Interesting that Albert served as contractor. My understanding is that Albert met Tafel after he gave a lecture in Racine, which resulted in the wonderful Albert House in North Bay. Later, Albert, Tafel and McDonald formed an architectural firm, as evidenced by numerous renderings, etc. now stored in the Wisconsin Historical Society. |

Curious as to what happened to the kitchen? The entire house now reads as a great studio space for some creative activity. That bathroom renovation is tragic. it appears to be done by someone who thought the rest of the house was the garage. _________________ ch |

The odds of this house being tarted up and flipped seem high -- unfortunately.
The price is ridiculous to a San Franciscan . . .

SDR, you could redo your walk-in closet and sell it for that price. |
