Knowing that the structure was employed as multiple-unit housing explains a lot, including the spray-on coat of white. The bones of the thing are still there,
visible in the openings and the general silhouette, at least ?

In our high-school library I came across a book of old cars which contained a photo of a Springfield Rolls Royce in the nude -- a bare chassis, substantial and
well-proportioned, that excited me as much as any beautiful car had done til then. That was a lesson of some sort. The stripped condition of the Burnham
mansion shows the same sort of noble essence, to some here at least, and I'm glad of that.

The deadline for Mr. Enck to be able to announce to the school board that he can save the house is tomorrow. He still needs to raise almost $3000. If you'd like to see the house saved, please give. I did!

Is "rehab" different from "restore" ?

They are moving the mansion one block east. Part of the site faces a park, so it will have good visibility. Still, arranging to have a house of that size moved by July 15 seems daunting. I'm guessing we aren't out of the woods yet. Good luck to Mr. Enck though! He's doing the right thing.

At least it will be next door to a house of similar size and roughly the same age, though a full-fledged Victorian. Facing the park, it will have a better view than from the old site.

Really pathetic that they are disturbing this house in order to creat a parking lot. Grrr. School districts are responsible for a lot of such nonsense...as in the Irving Gill house that LA Unified tore down decades ago to their everlasting shame.

Matt, which Gill house is that? I know of only one Gill design in the Los Angeles (West Hollywood, actually) area that was demolished, the Dodge House, and that was not done by LAUSD, but by Lytton S&L to sell the land to a private developer. There is a large apartment complex on the site.
