Rubbish! Are they offering any type of documentation? I perused the Quinan book but all I spotted were trash baskets that appeared to be wicker. I spotted one in the lobby but it looked solid, not open metal.

I have sent this message to the seller:

Sir or madam: What provenance does this item carry ? What literature supports this as a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed object ?

Jack Quinan's monograph (MIT Press, 1987) on the Larkin Building does not show a wastebasket like this one in any drawing or
photograph. Wicker wastebaskets are shown on pp 47, 48 and 63.

Interestingly, a photo on page 71 of the Quinan book, a basement view with lockers, does show three objects, larger than the wastebasket, which are framed in wood (?) in a manner echoing the metal wastebasket. They may be umbrella stands . . .

According to Jack Quinan, the Larkin budget got out of hand -surprise, surprise - and the commercial wicker waste baskets was one of the cost-saving compromises.

Is it conceivable, then, that this metal wastebasket was made for the building -- perhaps as a prototype ? Someone associated with the project, perhaps on the craft side, hung onto it all these years, perhaps handing it down to a relative ?
If no drawing, photo, or paperwork can be found, how would the owner -- and the seller -- hope to present a provenance ?

Does it look like something Wright could have drawn ?

Well, anything is possible. Hard to imagine someone being sentimental about a wastebasket from an old office building but then again there are people who collect McDonald's Happy Meals boxes, so what do I know?
