For Sale: Karl Kamrath's Gonzalez Residence

Post by pgharchfan »

Part of a grouping of houses by Kamrath on Tiel Way.

One was demolished 2-3 years ago. It was also designed for a couple without children, so it was difficult to find a buyer for a multi-million dollar house with only 2 bedrooms.

The only Karl Kamrath (1911-1988) design I've ever seen is one interior shot in the October 1959 House Beautiful, page 221. Kamrath knew FLW, but was not an apprentice. Yet his work is obviously strongly influenced by FLW.

So, based on the history you linked, the one demo'd was the architect's own home. Hate to see that ...

The one demo'd was across the street from this one. There are still 4 Kamrath houses extant on Tiel Way. The architect's own house is in the good hands of a Houston physician who occasionally opens it for tours.

A small portion of Kamrath's work is documented here. (and not always the best things either) http://www.houstonmod.org/buildings.asp ... %20Kamrath
