something as prosaic as a gutter

Post by outside in »

Wright hated gutters and downspouts - didn't want to upset the horizontal line!,,the gutter within a gutter had to do with maintaining strict horizontality (is that a word?) while providing pitch to the drain. So, he hid a "real" pitched gutter within a horizontal custom gutter - a detail first developed at the Willits House, later used at the Barton House, and then transferred to Darwin Martin. And yes, Mr. Harding, that is the original detail.

An interesting fact noted in the documentary: Mamah Cheney was 27 when she ran off with FLW.

They must have gotten it wrong--she was born in 1869. If she were 27 at the time, it would have been 1896. Now, some of the speculation is that Wright and Mamah started their affair in 1906, so maybe that's where the confusion came from; they were 10 years off somewhere in their notes.
