Sullivan's Decline?

Post by Matt2 »

We all know Sullivan died "penniless" as they always say. But what exactly happened to him. I should read a biography at some point. Did he spend too much? Did he alienate clients? Was it just a matter of changing tastes and an unwillingness to change with them?

Whether gay or not depends on how much credit you give the Twombly biography of Sullivan, which was, I believe, the first time it was brought up. It seems to be more surmise than fact-based conclusion. Same goes for Wright, who was similarly hinted at in the same book. Apparently there was more 'evidence' about Cecil Corwin, which may have rubbed off on LHS and FLW.

Sullivan had problems that dated from and caused the demise of his years with Adler: the demon rum.

Twombly attributes the decline to three causes, the big one being, as mentioned, his drinking. The second was his ill-tempered peevishness with clients (which the drinking could have exacerbated). The third was Adler's departure; he was the engineering brains as Sullivan was the design brains, and each needed the other.
