State capitol buildings range from dull to horrid, except for Nebraska (Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue) and Hawaii (John Carl Warnecke). North Dakota named their state capitol as most beautiful because it can be seen from Fargo to Medora ... not to mention Winnipeg.

It all goes to show, that given a choice between the finest any modern architect has to offer against a Victorian pile, the latter would win the popular vote hands down every time. I'm surprised the Carson House in Eureka didn't win for California.

Grandomania, from top to bottom.
As Mr. Wright once quipped: "It's merely a matter of taste", said the lady, as she kissed her cow.

What a hoot. Five honorable mentions of Wright (six if you count the Rookery Building), and one "best." The Illinois selections
are the most puzzling, even if one is Wes Peters's little house, recently moved and restored. Who contributed these nominations ?

I would have considered the Tyrone Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis if the original building by Ralph Rapson had survived, but the new one is a better selection than the perpetual favorite: NWNL Building by Minoru Yamasaki, a squat, Gothic-arched wedding cake.
