Thank you Randolph. Through the wonder of the Internet, I just did a Google "walk" in front of 14 East 11th Street. There are two identical townhouses side-by-side. I also "flew" overhead. Each townhouse matches the Tafel plans shown above (location of front windows, front door, stoop, etc.), includ...

Yes, I really like it, too. I think Tafel did an excellent job, and the work still looks good today. I could live there, no problem.

How does one access old telephone books? That would give us the address. From there, a letter to the house, with article enclosed, might confirm if the work is extant.

Edgar Tafel apartment 1954

I purchased the September 1954 issue of House Beautiful. It contains a fascinating article on the apartment renovation of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Tafel. In a Victorian-era townhouse, Tafel inserted a Wright-ish sensibility that stops short of the original elaborate cornices. Note how the new bathroom cub...

In reading pages 64 and 65 of this LONG thread, my impression (and please correct me if I am wrong) is that the Mystery Structure pictured on page 64 was thought to be the Pauson well-house, but as the thread developed it became clear that the structure was, in fact, part of Taliesin. But the struct...

Go here: http://www.columbuslandmarks.org/advocacy/gunning-house.php Scroll down a bit until you see PHOTO TOUR. The images are greatly enlarged, and there are more of them. To me, this is a fascinating house. It reminds me of a cross between Frank Lloyd Wright and Fred Flintstone. I have not been t...

I respect Hines, but do feel that he might have a slight bias in the direction of the slicker Austrian; he has written several books on Neutra, but none on Schindler... Yes, that would indicate a bias. Yet, in reading the book that is not evident. Hines is highly complimentary about both Schindler ...

In 1929, Schindler wrote director Josef von Sternberg, with the hope that the famous director would commission a house by Schindler. Hines states that the letter was sarcastic and arrogant. Years later, Neutra met the director, and the two stayed up all night discussing “Germany, America, modern a...

BOOK: Architecture of the Sun

I am reading the massive ARCHITECTURE OF THE SUN by Thomas Hines and published last year. The book details LA modernism 1900-1970. While the images are mostly so-so, and there is, inexplicably, a dearth of plans, the text is particularly engaging and informative. There was a lot I learned. In partic...

I’ve always loved this house. It has always seemed sorta overlooked to me.

It has the added advantage of being close to the Robie House.

It would be great fun to properly restore the house. And furnish.

What a treat seeing so many interior images. So few archival images exist.

I moved the front door to the west about 1'-3" Yes, I can now see that you did move the pier over, which would have made the second floor balcony more spacious, AND the balcony wall is no longer under the bedroom widow (as it was originally). Actually, what you did would seem to have improved upon ...

I have left the '50's yellow toilet, integral sink/countertop and terrazzo floor in its original condition as a fitting tribute to the former owner. I for one would love to see an image! I would also like to see what it looks like standing right at the front door (or standing on the outside landing...

Then you would have also moved forward the adjacent pier?

I have left the '50's yellow toilet, integral sink/countertop and terrazzo floor in its original condition as a fitting tribute to the former owner. This pleases me to no end. Too often such elements are discarded. As the PR is not original anyway, I applaud the effort at recognizing that every old...
