I think it is possible to successfully decorate a Wright house NOT as Wright would have done. This is, of course, no easy task. The original décor of La Miniatura was remarkably eclectic, not to my taste, but certainly redolent of the original owner. As a historian I kinda like that. A 1994 Archite...

The video (top post) was difficult to watch because it started/stopped/started/stopped.

Is this just my computer?

Anyway, the building is incredible! Remarkable! Of course it should be restored. Wow!

Dear Jay, Thanks for the link to the 2007 thread. The older thread, and comments above, sorta confirms my sense that young people – save a few exceptional ones like Jay and Jeff! – do not know the work of Wright. In an age where information has never been so available, this seems particularly di...

Young people and Wright

About ten years ago I discovered a shocking thing. Young people (like under thirty) have no idea about previous generation (or two) movie stars. I mean, I can sorta understand being twenty-eight and not knowing who, say, Myrna Loy or Melvyn Douglas were, but stars like Bette Davis, Cary Grant, or Ed...

It is good to hear from others, and to find out that I’m not alone in my ideas. A nice feeling. Yes, I concur fully with the above comments. Look at the incredible amount of chat recently about getting just the right shade of red plastic laminate for a Usonian kitchen! These are just the type of q...

I wish to come to the defense of Marmol Radziner. Sorta. As I am unfamiliar with most of their renovation/restoration projects, I cannot really comment pro or con as to their “enhancing approach. However, I am familiar with their work on a 1950s home by architect Thornton Ladd, and published in...

Book on restoring Wright. What would YOU like to read?

In a previous thread I asked if anybody was interested in writing a book on the spate of Wright restorations done these past ten years or so. This led to John Eifler and I getting in touch, and having John forward a proposal to my long-term editor at WW Norton. The book that I yearn to see in print ...

Twenty years ago the Glessner House was surrounded by vacant lots and vacant factory buildings. Today the immediate area has been infilled with low-rise condos, and high-rise condo towers. The transformation is astounding. I would not have thought it possible when I was there in the late 1980s.

UPDATE:

My editor at WW Norton was excited about John's book.

I wish this endeavor well! It is a book that needs to be published.

Dear outside in,

I would be happy to help introduce your book to WW Norton in NYC. I work with Jim Mairs there, and he will love such a book.

I have a long relationship with the publisher WW Norton, and would be happy to facilitate such a book proposal getting to the right person.

Thank you.

I know there are books, and even videos (Heurtley), on individual Wright houses and building restorations.

What I yearn for is a big, fat, information-packed book on, say, a dozen such projects.

Again, does anybody know if such a book is in the works?

Book on restoring Wright?

Is anybody writing a book on restoring Wright? The last ten years has witnessed a spate of impressive restorations. Just on Wright Chat this week is the extraordinary restoration of the Ross House, a particularly gratifying project as it seemed so hopeless a year or so ago. There are, of course, wel...
