Frank Lloyd Wright, Fashion Designer

Somewhere along the way I've read or heard that Wright designed dresses for client's wives. Has any one seen images or drawings or these dresses? Or is this just an urban legend?

one more kick of the horse.... If something was "unexecuted" then then should it be added during any "restoration?" Restoration seems to imply returning a house to a specific period in time, but including unexecuted items seems contrary to that. This really applies to any historic home, not just Hol...

And as for the pergola, I love the 1970s aspects of it, but really wonder what the original structure looked like.

Is there any photographic evidence pre 1940s?

I understand and accept your argument Roderick, and agree that probably many docents can't accurately discuss what changes occured when, but I am coming more from a historical background than an architectural history background and I find the whole story of the house interesting. That being said, yo...

The later additions and renovations to Hollyhock House do not bother me, because the story of the house isn't just about Frank Lloyd Wright; it is also about Aline Barnsdall, Rudolf Schindler, Lloyd Wright, The California Arts Club, the Olive Hill Foundation, and the City of Los Angeles. Any histori...

Brooks on Maher: "His influence on the Midwest was profound and prolonged and, in its time, was certainly as great as was [Frank Lloyd] Wright's. Compared with the conventional architecture of the day, his work showed considerable freedom and originality, and his interiors were notable for their ope...

Its like those skyscrapers that save a historic facade and gut the original building to build something new. I'd like to see the finished product and see how it captures "the historical integrity of George Maher’s architecture" because it looks to me like 90% of the house is gone.

Another issue is when docents are attempting to learn more about Wright and do extra reading and don't critically evaluate their sources. Anyone posting on this board knows urban legends about Wright, or about certain buildings, and those stories show up even in published accounts, in spite of the f...

I didn't mean to suggest that Wright said the skylight was retractable, only that you could see the stars through the art glass. I tried to find the reference today and all I could find was Edgar Tafel (in Apprentice to Genius) suggesting you could see the stars reflected in the fireplace water feat...

Wait, there was a bridge over the moat? Can you elaborate (I too am a current Hollyhock House docent) and about the skylight...I am sure I read somewhere that Wright himself said you could see the stars reflected in the water of the moat. Now that could have been hyperbole, or it could mean that Llo...
