Re: 1949 Taliesin Origami Chair - Dimensions? Sketches? Drawing?
ebasta: That is interesting. It would be structural folly, were it not for the fin(s) that support the tail from above. Perhaps the decision was made in relevance to the seat upholstery---if only to allow the air to move when the seat is compressed ? Of course that could be accomplished with a few h...

Vittorio Dassi at auction
Here's a mid-century Italian designer I had not heard of. A number of pieces are currently shown at auction. Here's one: https://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/storage-case-pieces/commodes-chests-drawers/v-dassi-drawers-maple-wood-curved-marble-mid-century-modern-italy-1950s/id-f_23465192/ A frameless re...

Re: The 8 Most Unexpected Places to See World-Class Architecture in the U.S.
It's great to see the country's notable architecture receive this kind of coverage. An oddity is that most of the buildings shown in the piece are not actually identified. What, for instance, is the St Augustine example ? One thinks here of Midway Gardens, by way of a superficial formal comparison. S

Read far enough (stories down the page) and you'll come to some nitty-gritty back-and-forth, Foundation vs School. Ouch . . .

Ah. I knew there was an explanation. (Seriously, I could have sworn David corrected the title of the thread recently; maybe there's a pesky memory function at phpBB that automatically rejects edits after nine months---or something.)

I thought we had corrected the spelling of the name of Wright's client, here. Apparently not. Serves Mr Mathews right for being an outlier ? Take that, you weirdos . . .!

The Stock Exchange screen installation in Bangkok, mentioned in my post above. I wonder how many elevators the building had . . .

Re: Monuments to Futility
I think that's quite fair. For me it's always been Wright's residential work that shines. I'd say his last great public work was Johnson Wax; he got a strong early start in that vein with Unity Temple and the Larkin building, only the former of which survives today. No public work of the postwar per...

Re: Monuments to Futility
We all judge buildings by a single or a few photos, of necessity---while knowing full well that the only true test is "on the ground and in your face" (and ears, and nose, and skin . . .)

Re: New Book: Louis Sullivan's Idea by Tim Samuelson
While watching a television drama filmed last year at various locations in and around Bangkok, I spied what appears to be one of the elevator screens salvaged from the Chicago Stock Exchange building of 1893-4, installed in an unidentified high-rise apartment. https://samblog.seattleartmuseum.org/20...

Re: Monuments to Futility
Heh-heh. The stereotype "Modern Architecture = Evil" which played again and again in the movies hasn't gone away, apparently. It's been taken up by some of the same people who claim that Hollywood itself is a threat to civic order ? On the same page can be found a piece from almost three y...

Too bad it was the longer-lasting (by far) of the exterior materials which was replaced---twice---and not the more fragile stuff . . .! http://sdrdesign.com/Pope1999.jpg Living room perfs, photographed in 1999 If I was one of those who look for tangible content in the perf designs, I woul...
