Re: 650ft skyscraper is engulfed in flames

Mr Wright was sometimes seduced by the building-products industry to try a new material---not always with success. A copper foil substance that might have looked like a proper copper roof was applied to the pitched portions of the Bazett house roof; it didn't last. Both the Jacobs house and the Hann...

Re: WILLARD KELAND HOUSE FOR SALE?

Has a plan of the house as it appears today been published ? In looking for one here, I found this not-very-old thread. Why my images are not appearing is a mystery. They will open in a new tab or window, as before. https://wrightchat.savewright.org/viewtopic.php?p=109364 I am having all kinds of tr...

Re: WILLARD KELAND HOUSE FOR SALE?

Thank you, David. I struggle to understand which portions of the house are Howe additions. Storrer mentions playroom, greenhouse, and patio fountain, and says the central courtyard is Howe's creation, resulting from those additions. In the excellent AD aerial photo, the playroom is the diagonal volu...

Re: Mathews House sold $6.3M

Quite right, Henry---the ceiling is a thing of wonder. There are two drawings that Aaron Green made (he saw to the completion of the house; many drawings in the construction set are by him) showing the layout of the ceilings and the length and end joints of every single board ! It's quite the labor ...

Re: Mathews House sold $6.3M

Let's hope that the little birdie who whispered something in my ear about enlarging a bathroom was misinformed . . . The house is in very good original condition; I can't think of much that needs restoration. A couple of patches to the slab might be improved. And of course the unrealized furnishings...

Re: The Queen is dead, long live the King

I've lost track of what lipstick is referred to---but on a parallel track I've come to the belated conclusion that Philip Johnson deserves scant praise as an architect. The Glass House stands as his sole stroke of genius as a builder---and that little building is well-understood to owe much of its d...

Ulmer was born in Czechoslovakia---possibly the locale of the movie in question---and worked in Europe as a movie production designer before emigrating to America and Hollywood.

Re: North By Northwest Movie - Phillip VanDamm House (updated 4/30/22))

I've seen The Black Cat at least five times, and every frame contains original design material. The distant shot of the house---a simple painted illustration---is seen on this blog page, along with images of the interior sets. The gravestones mentioned in the Vanity Fair piece are seen in this exter...

Re: North By Northwest Movie - Phillip VanDamm House (updated 4/30/22))

This story popped up on my phone the other day; thanks for bringing it to this thread, Stephen. As a fan of The Black Cat I am happy to see its rarely-discussed modern house mentioned. As for "After its momentous debut in The Black Cat, modernism did not appear as a villain’s lair again until H...

We're seeing evidence of a skill on the part of Mr Waters of which I (and others ?) had been unaware. What a pleasure !

Re: WILLARD KELAND HOUSE FOR SALE?

Thanks for that link, Dan. Boy, Jack could draw ! The most colorful plan drawings I've ever seen. I love all the red and green. There are subtle differences between the various drawings. I like the ones where the outlines of forms are blue. He might have made blue-line prints of a base drawing, and ...

Seventeen drawings; three irrelevant photos: https://library.artstor.org/#/search/Wright%20Keland;page=1;size=24 The drawings can be expanded for viewing; use the four-arrow icon at upper left of each page. As usual, we have only to insert the name of a client in the query box, after "Wright,&q...

Re: A Lautner Gem in Echo Park

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lean-to

The definition of lean-to seems to be a structure that depends on an existing one for at least a part of its support---or for its form, at any rate. Is Lautner's Salkin house a lean-to ? Or perhaps you refer to an addition to the house ?
