SDR, look at the perspective of AD German (by Lloyd) of a comparable date. It has the same vertical-line texture in the background. Lloyd did a lot of work for dad during that time.

Stern was interviewed in the Ken Burns docu. I suspect Burns was steered in Stern's direction by Philip Johnson. Why? Who knows.

Manhattan could be transformed into a decentralized city by reinventing the countless office buildings as residences, factories, roof-top farms and all sorts of other types of building uses for every economic demographic, effectively decreasing commuting into and out of the city by about 16 million ...

I hope this latest effort works. It would also be nice if the bank could be restored, even as something other than a bank, mostly to get the exterior of the structure back to what it was.

The wealthy of society have long moved out to the edge of town, away from the noise and filth of the central city, especially since the Industrial Revolution began. That's the habit, more than an escape from an uncomfortably heterogeneous society, that brought about Suburbia; after WWII middle-class...

One point I think ought to be made is that sprawl and decentralization are not the same thing. Los Angeles is a sprawling city, but not decentralized. Decentralization has to do with land use, not population density. As far-flung as the bedroom communities of Southern California might be, as long as...

Myron Marty is an interesting fellow from an interesting and prominent family. His father, Martin E. Marty, is a major Lutheran theologian who taught at the University of Chicago Divinity School for 35 years, has 5 books and over 5,000 articles to his credit, and is now a regent of St. Olaf College ...

"Rebel" was a library staple for decades. It's a light read that has little to do with the building material specifically. I have a copy, which I have not referred to in decades.

FLW never used pure white, although sometimes his choices were so pastel as to make it seem like splitting hairs. As to the windows, I checked all the sources I have and cannot find anything close to the pattern of those art glass windows. I'm sure they are not FLW's. To move Miller would certainly ...

DRN, I have Heinz's, Sloan's and Ehrlich's books on FLW glass, and those don't look familiar off hand. I'll scan them again, but I think the windows are not FLW.

I suppose the realities of urban life have necessitated re-installing the gate and grate on the exterior, but it's sad; it defies the purpose of the entrance. Personally, I like this building better than Gugg.

wjsaia, Geiger agrees that it was Gene who was in charge, to the best of his recollection: "He had a press room at the carport level under the stable. I was never there that I recall, and don't even know why I make that assumption, but I can see Gene hard at work in that location. It is my unde...

One of FLW's best late works. I hope some way can be found to keep the house in situ, restored and reinhabited. Michael, what is the free-standing structure at the left side of the photo? Looks like a gazebo. Can't say I've ever noticed that before.

DRN, that's correct. I had assumed the photo was a FLW house, and only Brown is rectilinear with a gabled roof. The low-to-the-ground roof at the left side of the photo is very like the roof over the maid's room in Brown.

About Boswell, keep in mind the carport, foreground in photo, is not original. Ronny Reisley told me she specified terrazo for the addition because the concrete was too hard to keep up. Terrazo could not be easier to maintain, though slippery when wet. Just try to negotiate Hollywood Blvd. in the ra...
