EdProf, those floor-to-ceiling windows in the gallery are the design element that I find inconsistent with FLW's usual work. The are great looking, but I wonder if they were done by Himself or if Gelbin or whoever did the working drawings did some editing?

I have fond memories of our 1950 Buick Roadmaster straight-eight, complete with overdrive, that got 8 miles to the gallon. It could pass anything on the road, except a gas station. In 1950, a Honda such as yours would have been seen as a toy; how times have changed.

The houses I've seen with radiant heat still in place all have copper as opposed to cast iron; is this the case with your house, dtc? Does anyone know of a house with extant iron heating pipes?

Seems to me I recall someone on this site posting a large number of photos a while back. Try a search right here.

Marco Wolff, Jr was a professional pianist who had wanted to be an architect. For his house, which was featured in HB shortly after it was built in 1961, Wolff insisted that Lautner hew to the FLW aesthetic, which, by that time, Lautner was well beyond. He did so, reluctantly, and produced one of hi...

The main house was designed in 1955 (Mono 8, 174-6, showing the original Usonian Automatic plan Virginia rejected, and as-built elevations) and built over a fairly long period of time by Don and Virginia themselves (Virginia did most of the stone; Don did the woodwork and furniture). The three cotta...

Oh, DRN, I think EJ couldn't have merited Jude Law on the best day of his life. Of course, he was ancient by the time I met him. I still claim Dustin Hoffman would make the best FLW, strictly from a physical point of view. He also has the deep voice and the challenged stature. McKellen, though he do...

My favorite place near Fallingwater is Mount Summit Inn. It used to have craftsman (original, not fake) furniture in the lobby, but that's probably not there anymore. It's in the country, but very handy to the houses. It's been so long that I can't quote a price, but they're on the 'net.

The comment is wrong in two ways. Frank Sullivan was never a student of FLW, and John Rattenbury, who was, is Canadian.

My brother (or more correctly, my sister-in-law) recently redecorated their kitchen with mascarello granite countertops. He sent me a photo. Rather a colorful stone: all the hues of lasagna with ripe olives. I e-mailed that it looked like an Italian food fight. I tried talking him into jasper, or Si...

peterm, one difference between Marin and the aqueduct is that the stone of the latter is in compression, while the thin skin of Marin is designed to at least appear to be in tension, as if the the slender metal attachment at the point where the arch meets the rail is a pin holding the stretched skin...

Marin is a terrific design. What we on this site should keep in mind is that when we rank things good, bad or indifferent, we're generally comparing Frank Lloyd Wright to Frank Lloyd Wright. Compare Marin with most public structures of the same sort, such as those in Los Angeles, Honolulu, San Franc...

I agree about the fabric. Not good. The price is ridiculous.
